Scott Stevens definitely went out of his way to hurt guys. Did he go out there trying to end people's careers... probably not.

Eh. He saw what happened with Lindros and Kariya and I don't think he changed it up at all.

I did say probably.  :-\

And just to be clear I think there's a distinction between guys who lined guys up for big hits and guys who intentionally hit heads with as much force as possible. Rob Blake, for instance, was the former. Stevens was the latter.

I have to assume that Air France ad is an implicit promise that they dope their in-flight meals with MDMA.

I think when Stevens lined someone up, he wanted to take them out of the game. I never saw the hits as "illegal" at the time.

They weren't illegal. I do think, though, that there was sort of an unwritten gentleman's agreement that you shouldn't target and hit the head as hard as possible during the helmet-less era because of what happened to Bill Masterton. Then helmets came into the game and that got lost a little.

So, yeah, the NHL rules didn't prevent it but I still don't think that makes it right and I think it's guys like Stevens that necessitated a rule change.

Some stray observations:

1. Kapanen is an NHL player. Johnsson might be too. That there aren't spots for them is bad asset management.

2. Dermott is good. I think it's more than likely he'll be a NHL defenseman. I don't see any star potential though.

3. I'm officially on the Grundstrom train.

More so with the Kariya hit, it wasn't the location of the hit on the body, but the lateness of the hit.

Leafs are winning this?  Jeez, MTL has been awful in the pre-sea.

Correction. The Almost All Marlies are winning.

It's kind of too bad these aren't counting.  I can only imagine what the reaction would be if they started the season 0-6.

I absolutely love how much the tide has turned for the Leafs. It's a pretty good indicator of improvement when us fans have taken to feeling sorry for other teams.

As in previous games, I liked Kapanen, Leivo, and Dermott. Think all could play in this team. Grundstrom still looks really promising. Tonight, Johnsson and Borgman impressed.

So... I'm with Nik on "asset management." There are enough guys who can play that the Leafs should be moving out expiring contracts for the next bunch of picks.
