Ranking Prospects 2022-2023

TLN:
11. Ryan Tverberg

This seems like more of a high floor rank, than a ceiling one. That being said, it looks like he has the profile and the gumption to play an energy role on the NHL squad eventually. He's kind of a maniac.

Like him a lot. Seen him play quite a bit live and I think he has a shot down the road. Hard worker, great hands and really put in a effort to play a 200ft game. I think he may end up being a winger in the NHL, like Marner.

Just needs to keep developing his physical foundation so he can actually put his smarts and hands to use in the NHL. He could easily slot in on the wing with a bottom 6 defensive centre alongside a forechecking net-front LW with a bit of a shot.

This was a fun (and sad lol) retrospective on the T25U25 to see how the pipeline has shifted between managements (and sort of how we watch and interpret the game). The comments discussion is also very good, if not better.

TLN:
10. Ty Voit

If we're lucky, this is a mini-Marner with more centering and line carrying experience (but lower ceiling). There are a few other candidates in the the same player type that don't look as promising (Abbruzzese, Abramov, Der-Arguchintzev).

TLN:
9. Nick Moldenhauer

Hard for me to have a strong opinion with the very limited sample I've watched.

This aggregated scouting report leading up to the draft is pretty thorough

Sounds like there are a lot of tools (especially in his base of movement) but some refining is needed with his puck and decision making skills to get to the next echelon. Playstyle seems to be a good utility third banana to help chain sequences for his linemates.

There was a DZ blueline steal by Roni before he sauced

Roni scored the 4-0 marker at the end of the second on the PP but there is no video of it.

This would?ve been called the Tyler Kleven special

TLN:
8. Nick Abbruzzese

Has the smarts and vision to help chain sequences in transition and on offense, but size and speed are currently limiting factors (a la Adam Brooks). Is there a world in which this potential comes together? Seeing how he stacks up in the AHL pace with similar prospects (Abramov, Der-Arguchintsev) will be enlightening. It might not be as much of an issue for him with the right linemates as he favours give-and-go play.

Grebyonkin profiled as more of a playmaker, but it's nice to see he's got some rush instincts. That stutter step to draw in the defense to give himself more space was very nice to see. Heads up awareness to see the secondary backchecker could be kept out of the play by going outside.

TLN:
7. Pontus Holmberg

This is my pick for Marlie to surprise on the NHL team this coming season. He has a pro-ready game and can slot in flexibly as top 6 complementary left winger or bottom 6 two-way centre/wing. If Keefe is open to trying it, you could easily get a (cheaper) copy of the Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander line that was ripping up matchups a couple years ago to give the Toronto line (Bunting-Tavares-Marner) a longer run.

I can't think of the last time we've had surprise from the AHL impact the team.

I think Hyman as a bit of a surprise for most but that was during that artificially suppressed season. Brown and Johnsson to lesser degrees. Engvall in a different way (longer, more gradual, so not a surprise).

PPP:
25. Brandon Lisowsky

Smol, scores a lot, needs to work on a lot of hockey-related skills without the puck. Easily a good 7th round flier, but not likely to make NHL hay unless the off-puck game and strength/skating round out.

Raty from Hirvonen and Niemela; very nice pop out and (lucky) pick up of the rim in, and then just a mean pass to set up Raty.

Smaller, but better and cheaper Mikheyev?!

PPP:
24. Dennis Hildeby

He's sort of my favourite (drafted) goalie prospect in the system, mostly by virtue of being not in the MHL and what the goalie scout here is saying.

Shorthanded steal, break away, slapped into the pads. He is cloning the wrong Mikheyev move at the end.
