Resigning Zach Hyman?

The Hyman situation is just one where the cap forces the team to get worse next year.  If they let him go, they are worse than last year. If they sign him for 5 million/year then they are worse than last year and also continuing to get incrementally worse as the years go by and he gets more and more injured.

I think they did the right thing by opting for the slightly less bad future scenario.

Looks like no return for Hyman and he will sign a 7-year deal once free agency comes around.  Dubas reportedly turned down a 6th round pick for his rights

What am I missing here?  Unless Dubas thinks he still has a chance of re-signing Hyman between now and Wednesday, why not basically take whatever you can get for a guy you are going to lose.

Edmonton is no longer in the Leafs' division and they'll be in the other conference, so it's not like he has to worry about Hyman coming back to bite them or something.  Who cares if they give him 8 years and/or it lowers the cap hit on him.  Not like it affects the Leafs one iota.
It affects everyone regardless of divisions. It takes money away from Edm who may be competing against the Leafs for a player in free agency. Every dollar counts.

The Leafs could also draft the next Mark Stone with the 6th rounder.

Every dollar, asset and pick counts.

They could also just sift through the remaining undrafted players and find the next Mark Stone. How much more likely is that to happen with a 6th round pick? Probably not much.

Dubas said they will invite non drafted kids to camp so that tells me they have their eyes on a few.
