Ryan O'Byrne To Toronto

He's led his team in hits the last four seasons and he's good for the occasional fight so he brings something to the table. I haven't seen nor noticed him a lot (which might be ok for a defensive dman)

Leafs already have one of the toughest if not the toughest team in the league, this guy just pushes them over the edge.

I don't know if we can say this yet Zee.  I mean sure we have a Orr and McLaren for 5 min a night and Fraser is a help on the back end.  Komarov has added some tenacity, JVR is a bigger body and the guys are all playing with a bit more of an edge.  We are still not what I would call tough group yet though, maybe feisty.

But be wary he doesn't use his size quite as much as he could. If people are expecting a freight train of a player who runs absolutely everyone over at every opportunity, they will be a bit disappointed.  Those hit counts sound a tad inflated, but it is a subjective stat compiled by the home team, sooooo....

My only concern with him is speed. He isn't super fleet of foot and has to play a conservative game.  I think Carlyle will maximize that like he has with Fraser so I'm not super concerned.

So is Ryan O'Byrne our replacement on Luke Schenn.  Is this what management had hoped Luke would turn into. Scheen (23) at 6'2 and 230 7 points 30 PIM or O'Byrne (28) at 6'5 and 240 4 points 54 PIM.  Looks like we got an older maturer Schenn. For a 4th! Hope this turns out seems like a real solid move.
O'Byrne>Schenn

Like Corn Flake says, we should temper our enthusiasm for O'Byrne a bit. He looks to be a third pairing guy . He may not even add enough to be a regular in the line-up.

I don't know about that, Carlyle loves big guys, this kid seems to fit his mold perfectly.

Yeah. I thought he had earned a few more games of ice time too. Especially when Holzer was struggling.

O'Byrne might be struggling this season, but without looking up his advanced stats he was apparently pretty solid last year. A trade might rejuvenate him a little bit. He wasn't exactly playing for a very good team either.

Didn't play last night - is he hurt? I thought he was brought in to play and not just add depth. Phaneuf/Gunnar/Franson/Fraser are marked in the lineup with ink now and Liles has been getting stronger each game since returning. I guess they plan on rotating Gardiner & O'byrne/Kostka based on the opponent.

And don't forget, he played with Liles and they were good together. I am just wondering what RC is waiting for. maybe waiting on him to be adapted to our system.

I mentioned this in the GDT on how RC has incredible patience.  He sticks to his game plan and is not persuaded by the media or any other extraneous hoopla.  It would be so easy to insert O'Byrne into the lineup and he would have likely had the game of his life banking on adrenaline alone after a trade but RC didn't.  Without checking to confirm this it wouldn't surprise me if O'Byrne were not the only healthy NHL player acquisition obtained at the deadline that has of yet played a game.  That is how RC rolls.

Nothing against Carter Ashton, but watching O'byrne play makes me really wish we still had Keith Aulie.  Similar frame size, but Aulie had far better mobility and really excelled at separating the man from the puck.  O'byrne is painfully slow.

He's giving me Komisarek flashbacks with players driving into the zone wide on him.
