Didn't the Leafs beat the Sabres a week ago?

March 15, also 5-2, also with Martin in the lineup.
I argue he is already there with Laine. He'd be over 40 goals now if he played a whole year going by his career gpg. The kid is pretty good!Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate said:If they ever get him sorted out on the PP he'll be right there with Laine in goal scoring.CarltonTheBear said:If the Matthews/Nylander PP unit gets going the 2nd round is absolutely in reach.

CarltonTheBear said:Just a follow-up to that Matthews post. I don't think this has been getting enough attention but Auston has quite easily been the best 5-on-5 goal scorer in the league this season. McDavid leads that category with 30 5-on-5 goals in 80 games. Matthews has 26 in TWENTY less games.
He also leads the league in goals/60 at 5-on-5 with a rate of 1.75. This will be the 2nd year in a row he's led the league in that stat (last year he did it with 1.56).
McD has 35 5v5 goals, Matthews has 29. Matthews is tied for 2nd with Laine and Malkin for gpg% of .55.... OV leads. Funny thing for me. Everyone goes on and on about how great Laine is at scoring goals, and he is, but Matthews has matched him percentage wise both years now. He's just as good and doesn't depend on the pp to get his goals.CarltonTheBear said:Just a follow-up to that Matthews post. Laine's a finisher, he doesn't create offense all by himself. He needs a guy to get him the puck in a good shooting spot and he can snipe it home. Matthews can drive an offense all by himself, doesn't need to be setup. That's my hot take on why Matthews > Laine

Per naturalstattrick:
The pair played primarily behind the Kadri line, which was shelled against the Eichel line, but they did quite well shot-share-wise against the rest of the Sabres. Unfortunately, 9-10 of their 13 5-on-5 minutes were against Eichel's line, which snuck in a good number of dangerous chances.
I'm guessing they're going to play together again for the remaining games as Dermott walks off the shot block. I think it should help Zaitsev's confidence to have Hainsey barking directions to him to offload some of the decision-making strain, while Zaitsev being the primary engager can soak off the physical strain from Hainsey.
CarltonTheBear said:Pretty sure Nylander knows he's now a goal away from a $212,500 bonus.
Coco-puffs said:Dermott-Rielly, Gardiner-Polak(Carrick), Hainsey-Zaitsev if that means Hainsey-Zaitsev get hard minutes and can survive. (Carrick in brackets because I prefer him, but we know Babs is gonna play Polak)
