The offensive woes are not because Berube’s style is wrong. It’s the personnel only half applying it every couple of games.
Most goals come off the rush or off turnovers or off rebounds (basically similar to turnovers). Generating rush chances tends to leave you susceptible to rush chances against. But generating turnovers through the forecheck (pucks in deep) is relatively safe and effective when applied consistently and tires out defenses. Taking shots less selectively leads to more rebound opportunities as long as the Leafs put in the effort to fetch. It’s PK puck.
The Leafs, since Matthews return, have defaulted to Keefe-era habits: hold the puck, look for seams from the perimeter, get counter punched. Matthews-Marner naturally play that way, and they usually have the skills to make it work, but that’s pretty much not the case for anyone else south of Nylander on the roster.
