Sabres vs. Maple Leafs - Dec. 20th, 7:30pm - SN, TSN 1050

Thoughts on Murray?
On the 3 that counted
I thought the first was stoppable but it did change direction off the Leafs defenders stick. I wouldn't call it soft. Kind of a knuckler because of the deflection.
The second was a perfectly placed shot just inside the upper corner. I'm not sure about Murrays positioning for the shot. He seemed a bit off towards the blocker side from where he would ideally be. But with that perfect rocket, I'm doubtful his positioning would have mattered.
I don't think Murray had much of a chance on the 3rd goal.
Nothing soft. Not lights out flawless or great either.

Thoughts on Murray?
He was fine. Played like you’d expect a solid backup to play. First goal was weak, for sure, but otherwise, he stopped the shots you expect a backup to stop. No chance on the 3rd goal, and the 2nd was the type that separates the top 10-15 or so goalies from the rest.

Probably should have had the 1st one that was waived off, too, but it ultimately didn’t matter for the result. First NHL appearance in more than 18 months, though, so I’ll give him a little extra leeway. Will need to cut down on the softies if he wants to reclaim a full time NHL gig, though.

Thoughts on Murray?
As I heard the post game and went through the media, it was an inspired effort by the skaters. Their first periods haven't been so hot but they got off to a better start in this game. They wanted Murray to do well and played to make sure of it. He'd won two Cups and made $39 mil but he still wanted to play and proved it with his rehab efforts.

They had seen him doing the rehab back in the summer of 2023. Then the surgery in Oct 2023. Then all the rehab from the surgery for 15 more months. And then he put up these numbers in the AHL:
He's the best the Marlies had to offer at this time.
He earned that start last night as much as anyone. Everyone seemed to be in his corner.

I have not seen any obvious slowness, mobility limitations, disability, etc. He seems to move fine, handle the puck fine, track the play well, etc. Outwardly, according to his coach and players, he seemed calm and focused. He did give up some less than desirable rebounds as LK pointed out.
He's 30. Goalie save% on average starts dipping .003 below previous save% around age 32, .004 around age 35. We'll see how the next few games go but I suspect he'll be a fine #3 and might turn out better than that.

Poor Buffalo Sabres.

1. 12th straight loss
2. Scored enough to stay in the game but two goals get called back
3. Did that on home ice with over 70% of the fans cheering for the Away team...the team that Buffalo hates, the Leafs
4. The arena exploding in thunderous cheers every time a goal got called back

A salute to any Buffalo Sabres fan that was there during that rock bottom episode.

I thought he was good overall. Not facing NHL game action over 600+ days, it will take him some NHL game action to get timing and positioning back.
