Schenn's Next deal

RFA Luke Schenn has not been re-signed yet.

I was looking at this report on how much NHL dmen are paid
http://nhlnumbers.com/players?position=Defence&sort=cap_number&year=2012

Dmen who score tend to make more money. Rightly or wrongly, they always have in my opinion.

Veterans tend to make more money. UFA salaries are not directly related to RFA salaries - they're inflated.

If Marc Staal got $3.975, reviewing that list, it's tough for me to imagine Luke much over $4 mil/yr. On the other side of it, after reviewing the list, it's hard to imagine him less than $3 mil. He's probably closer to $4 mil/yr than $3 mil/yr.

Where do you think he falls and what term would you give him?

(It's slow this time of year - not an earth shattering question)

I would be fine with the term Sarge is suggesting - 8 years at somewhere in the 3.75 to 4 range.  What's the point in having a blue line this young and not locking some of them up long term...

Same here, 4 million per season sounds good to me, and I'd love to have him under contract with the Leafs for 8 years.  I have to wonder though if to get him signed for that long, will Burke have to pay him a little higher than 4 million per year?

I think so. You're paying for what, three or four UFA years there? If Schenn is worth four million right now, pretty hard to argue his UFA years are worth the same.

40 yrs, $125 million, but the last 20 years only pay $120,000 each so that the cap hit will.... oh wait.

3 years 10 million...  4, 3 and 3.

If I understand correctly he will be a restricted free agent at the end of three years and we would have the opportunity to sign him again or deal him.

Yes. As long as he's still an RFA, I don't object to a shorter term... Any deal that takes him into UFA better be a long one as I described.

So, for term.. At least 3 years.... OR.... 8 or more...  4,5,6, or 7 would be undesirable? Just wondering what people think would be too short or too long.

I love Luke but I am hesitant to offer up the big contract this early in his career. I like the three year with a bit of money and the chance to prove he should be locked down long term.

4 mil. X 8 (yes, eight)... I want him (pardon the pun) "locked down" long term.

I don't think Schenn signs that. I think he'd be leaving some money on the table there. I can see another deal that keeps him an RFA, then signing his longer term deal, after everybody is sure where he tops out. That's just my guess.

I have doubts Burke would give him a deal longer than five or six years. It probably won't be four as that would land him right on the mark for UFA status - they'll either 'buy' a year or two longer to get value into his UFA years or only go 2-3 years so they have one more RFA deal to haggle before he's a UFA.

Fair enough but don't think you'll be able to buy those UFA years and not actually pay for them. Schenn's not a dope, he's not going to ignore what we all just saw in the UFA market.

Just get it done already, I really don't see what the holdup could be.  Burke is offering less than what the Schenn camp is asking?

Also, why haven't teams placed an offer sheet for him?

I think if we see a short-term 3-year deal, it's going to be slightly north of 4 mil. I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's less.
