Seattle approved as 32nd franchise

I'm shocked a little that the Seattle Totems is a consideration/voting option for a team name with all the uproar around team names referring to the aboriginal population in NA.

I realize that Totems is not necessarily a derogatory term like the Redskins but I'm sure people would be upset by the Washington Wigwams or the Tallahassee Teepees.

I think there's a pretty important distinction between the cases where the mascot/name refers to people and ones where it doesn't.

They'll be joining the Pacific division (instant geographical rivalry with Vancouver) and Arizona will be moving to the Central division (something that they apparently aren't happy with, as it means increased travel and they're poor).

By that time it'll probably be Kansas City or Houston's probelm.

Nobody talks much about Houston, but I'd think that it'd be a great rivalry with Dallas.

The Toyota Centre is already there.  Do we know if the Rockets' owner backed off?

I've always felt like the one key rule for naming a team should be that you really want to avoid the sort of things that would go on an energy drink logo. It's why the worst names are things like Thunder or Wild or some generic supposedly fierce animal. That's how you get forgettable things like the Jaguars or Raptors or Lightning.

Go local, go with something with character.

Some good ideas here. I like repurposing the old Seattle Pilots idea.

I like the idea of the Pilots, too. Depends on whether or not the Brewers still own the rights to the name. Aviators is a pretty interesting idea, too.

Still pulling Seattle Sound, though. I like alliterative names, and it works on a couple levels. Probably too close to their MLS team, the Sounders, though.

I know the Mariners have worn Pilots throwbacks a few times over the years so if anyone owns it I imagine it'd be them.
