I really can't believe there's belly aching here over Spezza not playing in the first game. He's a fringe 4th liner. He played like a fringe 4th liner through out camp. All last  year people b*tched that Babcock wouldn't demote Marleau because he likes his veterans. Now he sits a veteran and he's an unclassy idiot who's choosing the first game of the season to send a message to Dubas. Come on people. Quit looking for conspiracy theories. Only people on message boards have the time to come up with these back room drama stories.

I'd buy this if Nick Shore distinguished himself in preseason and forced Babcock's hand. I don't recall anyone saying Shore stood out at all.  Playing Spezza in a game that would mean something to him is a feel good story and you have no complaints from anyone today. Why not just play the easy choice and if he's bad you have every reason to sit him in future games and nobody says boo about it.

Exactly. Shitty move by Babs IMO. Shore didn't do anything to say I'm better then Spezza.

And the simple fact that if Babcock likes their penalty kill more with Shore in it then that is what it will be. I am a bit surprised at all the sentimental stuff online. Babs has to ice the team he thinks is best and that is that. Why all the heart strings for Spezza?

But Babcock said Spezza will play on Friday.

Does that mean he will be playing a PK he likes less on Friday?

So you're buying the "he needs more time to figure out the PP" explanation?

No, but the post I quoted was responding to someone who said that "if Babcock likes their penalty kill more with Shore in it then that is what it will be"

I am saying that IF Babcock likes the PK with Shore better and Spezza will be inserted into the line-up with Shore coming out, then Babcock will be playing a PK he likes less on Friday, which makes no sense.

At the end of the day I hardly think Spezza or Shore would make much of a difference tonight against one of the worst teams in the league. What will they play 7-8 minutes?  So really what was the point of denying a feel good moment for a 16 year vet?

I guess I don't understand your seeming disagreement with my earlier comment that this is a pretty straightforward message from a coach to a veteran player saying I don't think you've been good enough.  And, to tread shakier ground, given his gudpro allegiance to a declining Marleau last year, his failure to extend that to Spezza suggests to me that he thinks Spezza has been taking his roster spot for granted, or he doesn't have a marleauvian enough attitude, or both.

If that's the case then what will change between now and Friday that makes him good enough to play then?

Or if its attitude, how does Babcock know that his attitude will have improved enough by Friday?

maybe Babs is preparing in case Sabourin decides to try and grab the spotlight by doing what he does best - Fight- Shore would be better exposed to that than Spezza

Ok, cool, I just don't get why you scratch him against Ottawa if it's just a random rotation. He was obviously looking forward to this one since he signed.
Based on Spezza's comments there's no lingering soreness or anything with him. This is just Babcock being Babcock, showing who's boss.

Such a dick move

And almost assuredly a *small* dick move. What a douche.

Shore has 0 major penalties in his NHL career.

Sandman's parents have flown in from Sweden for the youngster's first NHL game.
