Series 35: Athletics at Blue Jays

Thank you Cleveland! Not only for beating the Yankees, but for decimating their bullpen. New York is going to have to call up a fresh arm or two from Scranton Wilkes-Barre now.

Jays 1 game behind now.

Half-game, actually, but who's counting?

Me, I'm counting.

July 28, 2015 - Jays 50-51 - 8.0 games back of the Yankees
August 11, 2015 - Jays 62-52 - 0.5 games back of the Yankees

RA Dickey and Mark Buehrle are switching spots in the rotation.

Dickey is going to pitch tonight and Buehrle will go on Thursday.  Dickey has given up 3 earned runs or less in 12 of his last 13 starts.  Over that stretch he has taken his ERA from 5.53 to 3.93.

Buehrle has 12 straight starts with 3 or fewer runs.  I'm not really sure why they made the move unless they are planning on skipping Hutchison on Sunday against the Yankees.

They said during the game last night it had something to do with giving Buerhle and extra day off while keeping Dickey on his regular throwing schedule. Dickey has had some issues in the past when getting extra rest. With a knuckleballer, that's not super surprising. It's better to have a slightly tired arm so you don't throw it too hard.

Huh...I did not know that.

Yeah. It's something I've heard a few knuckleball pitchers comment on, and it makes sense when you think about it. Most knuckleballs are thrown fairly softly, to allow for more movement. Build up too much energy in your arm, throw it too hard and it doesn't move as much - or, sometimes, has too much spin to move a lot - and becomes much easier to hit. Dickey's is a little different, since he throws a hard knuckler, but in his case, when he has too much arm strength, he seems to have more difficulty controlling it - largely because it doesn't move the way he expects it to.

Gibbons, on why he?s giving Buehrle an extra day?s rest: ?He was a little beat up that last time out.  You know, he?s an old man. This time of year, it?s not going to hurt him.?

I'm assuming he's implying Buehrle is getting fatigued and/or playing hurt because giving up 5 hits over 7 innings seems to not support the notion of his performance lagging.  Gibbons has been pulling him with a low pitch count the last few games.

Hutchison is 9-1 at the dome with a 2.68 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. That's Cy Young territory.

The difference between his home/road splits are unreal. He'd be pitching in A-ball if he only pitched on the road.

I assume he means something nagging him, not beat up performance wise.

Yeah. Sounds to me that it's more likely about him not being 100% in his last start rather than being hit hard. Being pulled with low pitch counts but quality performances of late would also imply that.

How about them BLUE JAYS!?!?! Get excited Toronto sports fans! We can finally enjoy a competitive team.

I'm also excited about the Bills this year (Toronto sports fan cousin).

August 11, 2015 - Jays 62-52 - 0.5 games back of the Yankees

Yankees 1 through 5 hitters over last 3 games: 2-for-66 (.030 BA), 23 K, 7 BB, 0 extra-base hits, 0 RBI

Ouch.

Jays up 5-2 on a Cola bomb and Donaldson oppo shot; A's are loosening up in the bullpen.

Jays forced the pitcher to show everything in his first inning, allowing Colabello a very good look at what the change up looks like.

Jays having themselves a couple of beer league softball innings right now.

Edit: Smoak bomb.
Dickey is going to be so cold.

Jays up 10-3 in the 9th
Yankees trailing 2-1 in the 8th

Hello 1st Place my old friend.  It's feels like 93 again.
