Series 49: Darren O'Day x4

Head-to-Head
E - Blue Jays  6  N/A  N/A
C - Royals  5  4  4-3
W - Rangers  5  ELIM  4-2
WC1 - Yankees  5  1  13-6
WC2 - Angels  5  ELIM  5-2
Astros  4  ELIM  3-4

Good day for the Jays.  The Royals and Yankees both lost.  The Angels passed the Astros for the 2nd wild-card.

I thought there was home field advantage at stake there?

Finishing ahead of the Royals means that if the Jays and Royals both find themselves in the ALCS, the Jays would get 4 home games instead of 3 if the series goes to 7.  So you're talking about a potential one game home-field advantage.

Again, nice, but it's not the biggest deal in the world.

Facing the wild card team in the ALDS, who has theoretically used their top starter in the wild card game, is another benefit of winning the AL.

It also means they play the WC team who has to burn one of their top starters coming into the series.  So it does hold some value in the ALDS.

That's what I figured, but I can still see the Jays pushing for that.

What about when they substitute Kawasaki and Carrera, (and others) in when they've got a big lead...is there a limit to when or how many players can be substituted in during a game?

True. But there's a very good chance that the Wild Card team ends up with a better record than the winner of the AL West.

Some nice charts here.

Huh. So scoring a lot of runs is good. And preventing runs is good too. So then a team who scores a lot more runs than they give up...should be a pretty good team?

I like days where that isn't a controversial statement.

It's nice to see the statistics behind how they generate and prevent runs.
There's been evidence of some good coaching bearing fruit this year too (Dickey, Estrada, Cecil all having stellar second halfs due to their mechanical fixes; Goins taking walks).

Well, you never want to Jinx things but it looks like the Orioles have forgotten how to play baseball.
