Sharks @ Leafs - Dec. 3rd, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

So Carlyle says he's upset that Clarkson playing with Smith was seen as a demotion because Smith has been one of our highest scorers recently.

Yet after 5 points in 4 games Carlyle scratched Smith for 2 games.

Carlyle speaks out his rear end a lot in the media scrums.

This is going to be a comically bad game.  Joe Thornton might just introduce the Leafs crowd to "little Joe" tonight.  I think this one is going to be very ugly unless teams start overlooking the Leafs.

The fan reaction to hearing about Orr and McMcLaren in the lineup against San Jose.

jonasTSN1050: Projected Lines vs. SJ: JVR-Bozak-Kessel. Raymond-Holland-Kulemin. McClement-Smith-Clarkson. McLaren-Smithson-Orr.

jonasTSN1050: Defence: Gunnarsson-Phaneuf. Ranger-Gardiner. Fraser-Rielly. Goaltender: Reimer.

Poor poor Reimer.

Carlye pulled a fast one with McClement haha

There's eleven forwards who have more average ice-time then Orr and McLaren combined.  There's only three forward with more hits then Orr.
They hit, they fight, and most importantly, are relatively cheap.  If it weren't for them, you couldn't fit Clarkson, Bozak, and Lupul's combined $14.7 million in salary.  I'm sorry, but they just don't see enough ice to make the big difference.

I think problems like Carlyle playing Jay McClement on the penalty-killing a minute more then any other forward in the league is one of the reasons the Leafs are starting to crash.  Things like that won't hold up for an entire season.

Well, you kind of highlight the problem with having a useless set of 4th line wingers with your second paragraph - it forces the coach to gives more minutes to other players, and that often means more minutes than those players can handle effectively. If the guys on the 4th line were more useful, McClement wouldn't have to play as much 5 on 5, and that would probably help him be more effective on the PK. It's also possible that the guys that would replace Orr and McLaren could contribute to the PK as well. It's the fact that they don't see enough ice time that makes the big difference.

That's just not true.

It's almost like the team could have signed any of dozens of other players to similar contracts and had them contribute in more meaningful ways.

Even within house - Smith, Smithson, Leivo, Holland, Ashton are all lower cap hits or right about the same cap hit and are more useful players.

Orr has a $925k cap number.

Smith and Smithson have $550k cap numbers.
Holland's is $880k + bonuses
Bodie's is $600k
Abbot's is $660k

It's actually the opposite --- Relative to what they contribute, Orr and McClaren are paid a lot.  We got rid of Colborne even though he was cheaper than either guy, better at everything, played a position at which we had no depth, has potential at a young age, and played well against Boston last year.

Edit:  obviously I'm slow on the draw ...

Poor Rielly. Stuck out on the ice with Orr, Smithson, McLaren and Fraser. The only guy out there for the Leafs with any skill or skating ability.
