Sharks @ Leafs - Mar. 19th, 7:30pm - TSN4, TSN 1050

The roster out there is bad and half the veterans had it known the team wants to get rid of them. Not surprised it's mostly mailed in.

Missing their 2C, 3C, 4D, and 6D to suspension/injury. Traded away two wingers who mostly played in their top 6, and a defenceman who was on their top pairing. Most of those spots have been filled by AHLers, a lot of them career-AHLers.

Yeah, it's a pretty weak roster right now. But it wasn't so weak before all the trades and injuries...team shouldn't have been performing as badly as they were in January and early February.

Sharks broadcast guys pretty much can't believe how bad the Leafs are.

In reality, there is absolutely no reason this team should be this bad.

Yeah. But even a roster with Kessel, JvR, Kadri, Lupul, Bozak Phaneuf, Rielly, Gardiner and Bernier half-assing it should be able to scrounge a few more wins together.

Back then though the team didn't look completely awful, they really just weren't getting any breaks. It's a completely different story now. Partly because of the roster changes and partly because all the losing has really made some guys check out.

Yeah I don't envy being in management trying to sort out all of this.

If Im in charge of this roster, I happily await any and all offers sheets for my RFA's...... HAPPILY!

Not trying to pick an argument with you, but the course they need to take is dead simple.  All reasonable offers accepted.  The biggest challenge is to decide how much is reasonable, and yes, that could be difficult in a number of cases.

Sorting it out? The Leafs need to bottom out for 3 years, minimum, any kind of sorting is 'big funnel' sifting at this point.

But for a number of them, if they cannot enhance the value of the player in the near future, they can just take the highest bid from the other clubs and move on.

Having said that, they can't get rid of all 23 players by next September (not that they want every one gone). Maybe they can't move both Phaneuf and Kessel this summer for example because moving both those contracts won't necessarily be easy.

Some of these guys are going to be back for next season. Just give them lots of scoring ice time to maximize their trade value by the deadline (for example) and then they can move out a few more then.

It's a process. Everything doesn't have to happen by July 1. Even though keeping Kadri and Gardiner is probably on many people's lists, and they're not as likely to being moved, they'll probably get moved in subsequent seasons as they roll the older talent into creating a bigger, more talented core of youth.

To me, it's kind of like building a snowman. They have a little ball of young talent right now. Over time, they keep rolling their roster, acquiring more young talent by moving out the older vets, with a focus on continuing to improve the young core. That snowball of young talent will get bigger and better over time - eventually picking up 2 or 3 franchise talents they can take a run with.

They could make some errors along the way - like some may argue Edmonton has. But that's ok. It just takes a little longer. Keep rolling it over. They'll get there.

The big concern I have with it is whether MLSE will have the patience to do it right because it's going to take years.
