So the debate begins: Matthews vs. Laine

Oh great. Now if Canada wins Corey Perry will probably two-hand Matthews across the neck or something.

Matthews in on 8 of 24 goals for the US.  Matthews is the only player in the top 20 for Team USA.
Laine in on 11 of 34 for Finland.  Finland has 5 players in the top T-5 of scoring.

Your point still stands but I believe you mean 5 players in the top-9 of scoring (and that could change still after CAN-SWE plays their game).

Its shocking that the coach wasnt even playing him in as many situations as he could.

Does anyone thing Matthews as better than Larkin?

I though the same, especially in the third period and on the power play today. I thought it was a little odd, but probably not unheard of that he would put his NHL guys/vets out there rather than an 18-year-old. I'm not saying I agree, but that's how I rationalized it.

Nope.  I was making it look worse with the simple addition of including the top 5 (and ties) hence the T-5.  So, sure, it's the top 9, but it looks better if we factor in that they are all tied for the top-5 in scoring (unless more goals were scored since I posted that).

I only watched the shootout but the IIHF boxscore has Matthews playing 20:26, which would put him 2nd among forwards behind only Foligno who was just a few seconds over that. And he played more than any other player did in overtime.

Ah ok I just misread the "T-5" bit.

Both results are equally impressive to me though. Matthews is leading a bunch of U23 players in scoring while Laine is leading arguably the best team in the tournament in scoring.

So if we're expecting the media and the fanbases to decry whatever player the Leafs take with their 1st pick, where are the ridiculous trade proposals to net us pick #2 as well?

Over at hockeybuzz (seriously, Eklund's saying that the Leafs will give up Rielly/Nylander + for it).
