Well Carlyle says he's just an "option" right now.

With Orr and Bozak out and Smithson send down, doesn't that only give us 12 forwards with D'Amigo? Unless the plan is to play with 7 defencemen. In which case McLaren over D'Amigo is, well, you know.

The amount of cap space the Leafs have to clear to bring up Liles at any point in the season is minimal.

With Bolland on LTIR though aren't they able to exceed the cap by whatever that amount would be?

Well, before Bozak went on IR, they would have had to send someone down regardless, because the roster was at 23. With D'Amigo up instead of Smithson, it makes things a little tighter - they had $1.4M in space available according to capgeek before the move, and D'Amigo's cap hit is ~$320K higher than Smithson's (not including the $212K in bonuses he's unlikely to hit). They could do it, yes, but, it would pretty much take up whatever wiggle room they currently have. Really, though, I was talking more about the larger scheme of things - even if if everyone was healthy, all they'd have to do to bring up Liles is free up the equivalent of $925K in cap.

Yup. Liles isn't in the AHL because of his cap hit. He's there because the Leafs don't think he's better than Fraser/Ranger. It's that simple.

For the sake of accuracy. Once the cap issues are dealt with, the coach sets the roster, and the coach decided that Fraser and Ranger were better options than Liles.

This decision was made at the end of training camp. Time to give Liles a shot I think.

As long as we give the opposition five times as many shots.

That, as well as they couldn't afford to keep Liles on the roster no?

Doesn't that happen anyway?

D'Amigo wasnt brought up just to sit on the bench. He will play.

Liles was brought up and sat in the pressbox for 2 or 3 weeks. It's not guaranteed. They might go with McLaren and 7 D.

They could have if either Ranger or Fraser wasn't on it.

With Wilson as coach, Liles was a capable top 4 d-man. Like Grabo/McCarthur, he doesn't fit in well with Carlyle for whatever reason.

Sad he can't even get into a game considering the Leafs seem to have one of the worst depth at the position in the league.
