Steckel traded to ANA

Don't look now, but it's Steckel's birthday today.  Ice cold Nonis.

He got him a guaranteed trip to the playoffs, pretty good gift.

Not to mention he goes to an organisation which wants him and has a role for him. From players perspective it is always good to feel you are wanted.

Boudreau said having Steckel will lessen faceoff load on Getzlaf and Koivu and also alleviate Getzlaf and Perry from PK duty.

It would not surprise me if Steckel FO numbers returned to his usual level / winning rate.

Question is with the latest moves....is Nonis preparing for a bigger deal or not!?

Continuing to clean out the leftovers that aren't long-term or all that useful.

I was going to mention this - a lot of the moves lately have been to make room for injury returns, i.e. a bit reactionary to current issues vs. long term planning. It seems obvious that until they can unload someone like Komi, these small moves are going to be what we see for now.

This move is all about making room for Lupul and nothing about getting a decent return for Steckel. More of a timing issue. Either put Steckel on waivers and get nothing, or trade him and get anything.

Steckel was useful because he was a defensive player who played for a bad coach that couldn't implement a defensive system.  I think Carlyle has most of the team playing good defensively.  What's really needed is players that can produce points, but not at the sacrifice of offense.  Steckel could offer nothing.

Ryan Lasch might help the Marlies?

It's really a nothing move, but Colton Orr provides absolutely nothing to the roster other than useless fights.  How that is worth more than a guy who (until this year was dominant in the faceoff circle) and can actually kill penalties effectively is beyond me.

I think the main reason was Lupul was ready and they needed to make move. Steckel was the one to go. They got someone for him and a pick. Because McClaran was a waiver pick-up can they waive him? Besides needing an Orr could they get anything for him? Steckel is the only logical choice. I think a defenseman will be dealt in a trade deadline deal

Newly acquired forward Ryan Lasch is expected to join the Toronto Marlies during their upcoming seven-game road trip.

Why was Lasch playing in Finland, and not with the Ducks AHL team?

He was, and then was re-assigned to the SEL by Anaheim: http://www.norfolkadmirals.com/release_story1.php?id=2779

He didn't seem to make to much of an impact in that small stint with Norfolk, nor did he seem to be able to perform as well in the SEL as he did in the FEL.  Here is hoping that maybe the fact that knowing that he was actually traded for may give him some sort of motivation to do well.  Wow, Potvin's article from the Admiral website lists him even smaller at 5'7" and 170lbs whereas hockeydb had him at 5'9" and 175lbs.  I think he is likely too small to even stick at the AHL level.  He did play well in the ECHL by looking at his numbers with 15 pts in 12 games so that is where this guy likely tops out, just a East Coast leaguer or overseas pro.

We gave away Steckel for nothing. Lasch is a small journeyman in Europe and well, we got the seventh round pick.

Agreed.  Terrible trade.  Decent defensively and one of the best faceoff guys in the league.  Fail, Nonis.

He *was* one of the best faceoff guys in the league, he's been far from that this season.

he hasn't had much of a chance this season.

There's a reason for that.

Steckel looked very slow and ineffective this season. Good move.

His slow skating has always been an issue for him ... and for me. He was in a tough spot against the quicker teams.

Steckel in his debut for the Ducks miraculously rediscovered his face-off magic winning 7 out of 11 (63,6%) It is just a game, but I guess he have never lost it. Played on checking line, 10 mins of icetime. Wishing him well.

I'll miss Steckel, I thought he was the perfect fourth line center.  His face-off and penalty killing skills are way more valuable then Orr or McLaren's fisticuffs.  I was disappointed and surprised that Carlyle routinely scratched Steckel over one of those two.  What made it even more surprising is that when Carlyle first took over last season, Steckel was one of his favourites and he played the crap out of him.

McClement is a better 4th line centRE.
You're right, McClement is definitely a better overall player, but I guess I don't think of him as just a fourth liner.  As we've seen this season, he can slot in all over the lineup and not look out of place.
