SI that was a brilliant post. I agree with you 100%.  Perhaps the less we focus on what we do want the more chance we get what we want. Sometimes life works that way.
Management will just deal with what comes up and make the best choices. And we can all relax and enjoy the ride. We have already been through the living hell of the Carlyle/Horachuk years.

I don't agree with it at all.  What's the point of being a fan if you don't allow yourself to hope that (a) you get the best player available and (b) that that player will help you win the Cup?  Why would you hope for anything other than that?  And if the message is, don't hope for anything at all, just "leave to management to do their best" -- that's just robotic at best, disingenuous at worst.

I wasn't saying not to hope.  I was saying don't jump off a bridge if it doesn't happen, and don't think that the rebuild is in jeopardy if it doesn't happen.  My point is you can hope for the 1st overall pick, if it doesn't happen though, trust that the management team that is running the hockey club you are cheering for is smart enough to make the right decision going forward that will yield a high chance of competing for a cup.

OK, thanks for the clarification.

I feel dirty because Button seems to be his biggest fan, but I'm starting to jump on the Pierre-Luc Dubois bandwagon. Dubois, Chychrun, and Clayton Keller would probably make up my 4-6 rankings in some order; with Tkachuk, Nylander, and Juolevi being in the 7-9 slots.

That's basically the rankings that I have been seeing fans saying around the net as well.

I remember Bob McKenzie saying that if Matthews went in last year's draft (which he was a few days away from being eligible for), he would have been a clear cut #3.  So, not as good as Eichel, but better than Strome/Marner/Hanafin.

Eichel was about a month and a half away from being eligible for the 2014 draft, so the whole age thing goes both ways. Matthews is still basically a full year younger than Eichel. And while it's tough to compare their draft year numbers because Eichel was in college and Matthews is in Europe, if you look at their pre-draft year seasons where they both played for the US National Development team you'll find that Matthews put up better points.

It's impossible to say right now who would have been drafted over who, but I think Matthews is at least on the same level as Eichel.

With various sources saying that Matthews is really close to Eichel's skill but below McDavid I have seen a few suggestions of trades and a couple had the 1st pick team trading the pick to Arizona for Dylan Strome and their pick (currently 8th overall) which might be Tcachuk or Nylander.

I think its time to give the 'other kids' on the Marlies a shot to make the Leafs next year. We know what the Nylanders and Hyman's can do. Bring up Bibeau, Percy, Sam Carrick, Brennan and the 2nd tier types to see if any of them can contribute to the rebuild. Get the young stars ready for the AHL playoffs, and just have the Leafs coast in the rest of the way. It would really sort the haves from the have-nots and hopefully give the big team a better shot at drafting first overall.

i don't think you can can you?  like i thought you were only allowed so many ahl callups after the deadline.

That's correct, except in replacement of injuries.  Not to mention the Marlies actually have to ice a lineup to play.

We have 4 non-emergency callups to the NHL after the deadline; the Leafs spent 3 on Nylander, Carrick, and Sparks. Everyone else who has been up since the deadline has been on emergency call up, but with a third of the roster out with injuries (some out the rest of the season), some are here to stay for the duration.

You guys aren't going to believe this, but Edmonton lost tonight. As did Buffalo, Columbus, and Winnipeg (Jets earned a point though).

Calgary's up 3-2 on Arizona?
