You guys don't get it.  Detroit's scouts are the best in the league.  They have drafted guys in the 6th round and they went on to be superstars.  They know what you're doing.  Some of you on here are just up on your high horse trying to be right all the time.

You realize that by constantly disagreeing with anyone who disagrees with you (while never providing anything to back up your opinions) you're basically doing that exact same thing?

Here's a list of top-6 forwards or top-4 defencemen Detroit has drafted in the last 10 drafts:

Larkin
Tatar
Nyquist

They've done a good job with bottom-6 players (Ferraro, Turco, Abdelkader, Sheahan, Andersson), but the idea that they've got super-scouts is a myth. They drafted Zetterberg and Datsyuk 16/17 years ago. They can't ride on those coat tails for that long. Since then they haven't drafted anybody of note in the 6th round or later.

So, let me get this straight. The crux of your argument is that, because the Wings made some great picks almost 20 years ago, their scouts are the best in the league, and, therefore, their pick is better than the Leafs - despite what basically the entire hockey world says? And you think people are disagreeing with you just because they're "trying to be right?" Well, I certainly won't argue with that logic.

First of all, there's nothing wrong with trying to be right.

Secondly, the problem is you're presenting an extremely surface level understanding of the topic. You say that evidence of Detroit's scouts being great is that they "drafted guys in the 6th round who went on to be superstars" and I assume you mean Datsyuk and Zetterberg. But that was almost 20 years ago. How many of those scouts still work for the Red Wings? Do you know? The guy who ran Detroit's scouting department back then is Jim Nill, who's the GM in Dallas now. Why would the work he did reflect well on Detroit's scouts now? And how much credit should they get for drafting Datsyuk when he was already in the draft in the previous two years and they didn't draft him then?

And if Detroit's scouts are so great, why did they draft Brendan Smith instead of PK Subban in 2007? Or Jakob Kindl instead of Tuukka Rask or James Neal? In 2003 they drafted Stefon Blom 194th in the draft. He never played in the NHL. 12 picks later San Jose took Joe Pavelski. Then they took Tomas Kollar 226th. 20 picks later Chicago took Dustin Byfuglien. The reality is that Detroit's draft record over the last 15 years isn't particularly exceptional and lots of teams take good players in lower rounds.

And, no matter how hard you try, you're just never going to make people feel bad about knowing a lot about hockey and letting that inform their posts.

Man, there are a lot of knowledgeable hockey fans here, the standard can be high a lot of the time. There are times when I see posters receive crappy treatment, it happens. Don't let it dissuade you from presenting your opinion and learn from the back and forth when you can.

You all have been remarkably courteous in going above and beyond to explain why a different opinion should be considered.

And if you want to enjoy that right, you ought to let others enjoy that right as well. I learn so much more from having my own less-researched opinions dispelled than I ever could studying on my own.

It's one of the things I appreciate about the management team Shanahan has put together. It appears to be designed to have the best people in certain roles disagreeing constructively through their mutual expertise and respect to arrive at a stronger, data-driven decision than one that could be reached oligarchically.

Tru dat Herman. I have been shot down so many times on this board that your would think Billy Bishop was doing the shooting.

Buffalo scores 3 goals in the 3rd to beat Montreal 4-2. Just hoping for a Calgary win now, they're tied 1-1 with Carolina.

Edmonton beat Ottawa 7-2 while Buffalo picked up a point in a shootout loss.

Leafs are now 1 of 5 team with 47 points.

Ugh how do the Leafs have the same points as Winnipeg and Calgary?  Some of these teams need to seriously get their acts together.

Yeah, I didn't realize that either. Winnipeg, Calgary, Ottawa, and Montreal are all in free-fall mode right now. Vancouver isn't too far off either.

O Canada!

There's currently a 6-way tie for last place.

I can't remember seeing anything like this battle for the basement. I think the Leafs need more lead in their collective skates.

I look forward to some trades and, hopefully, a little separation from the rest of these Tank pretenders.  8)
