Definitely a different way to look at it. It's weird that the bottom-3 teams are all more likely to drop a spot than they are to move up or stay where they are.

They'll most likely finish 27th, with an outside chance of 28th (after Edmonton's win last night), assuming they don't win a bunch of these last few games (lol). I don't mind those odds all things considered.

That's the only way I've ever looked at it.  Buffalo has always had a 20% shot at McDavid vs 80% shot at Eichel (assuming they are 1-2).  It is most likely they will get Eichel...not McDavid.

4th last is where it begins to shift where you have a better chance at staying put or moving up, as opposed to moving down.

At the same time though, out of any one team they are the most likely to draw first.

You still have a 100% chance of drafting within 1 spot of your final finish for the last place team and while there is certainly an 80% chance that another team drafts 1st overall, it's a fairly steep diminishing returns.  63% for one of the top 5 draft move up to the top spot and 37% for the bottom 9 teams.

You still give a decent benefit for being very bad but you are taking away a team running into the season with a horrible team to draft a generational guy and not give a solid effort on the ice entirely.

so the Leafs hold on 4th is a little better today...I guess it is possible for Edmonton to pass them but they would need to win at least 3 of the last 8 to do it..and the Coyotes would have to go 4 out of 7 so that is not happening..and that is only if the Leafs lose out the string..

I love when people try to disprove things absolutely nobody in their right mind is arguing. Nobody thinks that the players on the ice are actually trying to lose.

For what it's worth, while I agree that nobody in their right mind is arguing that, he's saying that on Twitter, and I think there's likely a fair number of not right minds among his 138,000 Twitter followers.

So Coyotes win in OT.

Sabres fan cheered when Arizona won the game.

Mike Weber of the Sabres on the topic:

?I?ve always spoken extremely high of our fans. I don?t even know if disappointed is the word. They score that first one and our fans are cheering. Late penalty, they cheer. They cheer when they score to win the game.

I don?t even know what to say. This is extremely frustrating for us. We don?t want to be here. We understand where we are. We understand what this team?s doing, what the organization?s doing, the place we?ve put ourselves in. I?ve never been a part of something like that, where the away team comes into a home building and they?re cheering for them."

The bolded, no one will disagree as we all see what's going on.  But for a player to be so candid about it.  Wow.

I agree that nobody is making that as an intellectual argument but I think it's important to keep in mind that a lot of people are making statements like "The Buffalo Sabres are tanking" or "The Arizona Coyotes are trying to lose" and what Ferraro and other people who've said the same thing are doing is pointing out that The Buffalo Sabres can mean both the team and the organization and you are, inadvertently, tarring the players a little with those statements.

In a league that hypes up nonsense like "compete level" and feel like a "losing attitude" can be an infectious disease I understand why a player on the Sabres would actively bristle at hearing "The Sabres want to lose" because, rightly or wrongly, it might affect how his own performance is taken.

Fair enough. Maybe I was coming at it a little differently than Ferraro was. It's when people throw out the "players would never tank" line when you're arguing why it would be beneficial for a team to tank that bugs me. Which like I said I now realize that probably wasn't what Ferraro was responding to.

I'm torn between the tank and being a spoiler for Ottawa. We have two games against Ottawa left. Winning will be crush any hopes of finishing 3rd last, as long as that may already be. Losing them will greatly help Ottawa and their playoff push.

It's a good thing I'm not watching the games anymore.

With the Leafs holding the longest losing streak in the league, and having won only one of their last 11 games, who knows?  I know a lot of people have said the Leafs are bound to win some games down the stretch, myself included, but at this point I'm really starting to question that.  I don't think they have any more wins in them.

If Edmonton, who has been playing a little better, manages to win 3 more games than the Leafs do, maybe we move down another spot.  I would be ecstatic having a guaranteed 4th pick, with an increased chance at winning the lottery.  Yes, please!!  :D

Edmonton plays Dallas, Calgary, LA, and SJ at homem and Colorado, Anaheim, LA and Vancouver away.

Arizona plays Buffalo, SJ and Anaheim at home, and Pittsburgh, SJ, Calgary and Vancouver on the road.

Edmonton needs 6 points if we lose out, say they get 3 or 4 at home, then they beat Colorado and Vancouver on the road. Could happen. And I wouldn't be surprised to see the Leafs lose out, but they'll likely get a stupid bonus point here and there.
