The 2012-2013 Toronto Raptors thread: My Name is Jonas

Raptors trying to deal DeRozan (& Bargnani) to L.A. Clippers...

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine
In short: Sources say Clippers prefer Bargnani to DeRozan but are lukewarm to Toronto's pitch in either case, with Doc still so pro-Bledsoe.

Well, the Andrea Bargnani era is over in Toronto. The New York Times is reporting he's been dealt to the Knicks for Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, a 2016 first round pick and 2 second round picks.

They better have another move lined up to happen if this is legit. Looking at recent stats for Novak and Camby, Knicks win this one big time on the floor. Raptors only win in terms of the salary cap.

It's pretty much all about the salary cap.  Camby gives some veteran mentorship on the bench at best.  Is a buyout/retirement piece at worst.  Steve Novak is a career .433 3PT% shooter.  Something the Raptors lacked last year. And the 1st and 2 2nds come in a pretty good draft next year.

I don't know. My first instinct is to say it's a little beside the point to say that the Knicks won the trade "on the floor" when clearly the main value the Raptors got are the draft picks but honestly, when you actually dig into the numbers I don't even know that it's true that the Raptors do badly in a basketball sense.

If you break down Bargnani and Novak's stats last year on a per 36 minutes sense than, yeah, Bargnani outscores Novak(15.9 to 11.7) and outrebounds him(4.6 to 3.3) but Novak turns the ball over less(0.3 to 1.9) and scores his points taking significantly fewer shots(9.4 to 15.3). If you get into advanced stats Novak clearly does better with a higher true shooting percentage, PER and win shares(the win shares statistic is ridiculously lopsided for Novak as Bargnani ends up with a 0.1 to Novak's 4.0)

Of course there's a difference between Bargnani doing that as a nominal starter and Novak doing that off the bench but it does drive the point home. Last year Novak was a role player who did one thing well(hit threes) while Bargnani was a starter who didn't do anything well. So while there's considerable upside for the Knicks if Bargnani stops his slide right now those two players are a toss-up.

Apparently the Raptors have gotten an offer for Rudy Gay in the way of Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva's expiring contracts. Interesting to see just how much of a wrecking ball Ujiri wants to take to the place.

It would certainly give them a better shot at a top 5 pick in the draft.  Not sure if they would be bad enough to finish for Wiggins though so Im not sure.  Also I'm not quite seeing the logic in taking on an inferior package to what the Raptors gave up for Gay in the first place.  I would take Calderon's expiring and Ed Davis over Stuckey and C-vill's expiring

Well, the logic would just be that Ujiri isn't a huge fan of Gay's long-term but short-term would make the team too good to bring in a top 5 pick. While I agree that short-term it would look like a loss realistically those two big expiring contracts could be dealt for picks that would probably make the Calderon + Davis package a push.

Also, they're buying out Marcus Camby and amnesty-ing Linas Kleiza. That will leave them with about 20 million in cap space next year and only 13 million committed to two players beyond that(although with options on Jonas, Ross and Quincy Acy).

Today's Daily Dime over at ESPN asked five reporters to name who's been the most impressive in summer league play so far and four of them chose Valanciunas. It's not a big sample size but apparently he's put on weight and is playing an impressive physical game.

Dear David Stern: please rig the draft just one more time so the Raptors win the lottery.  We promise this time they won't screw it up.  Probably.

Yours truly,

People who want to be fans of the Raptors.

If we can't have the top young future star in Toronto for the Leafs, I suppose I could settle for the top young future star in Toronto with the Raptors.  I'm willing to make this concession, now somebody please make it happen.

Nice write up in SI about Valanciunas dominating the summer league:

"Mighty Mouse", better known as (former) Raptor Damon Stoudamire, from the franchise's early years, in town taking part in the Raptors Academy basketball camp.
