The Evander Kane Saga -> Traded to Buffalo

Those darn guaranteed contracts.

Right? Because when was the last time you heard of a NFL player being talented but not getting along with his teammates. Never, that's when.

The owners must always be trilled to see their money sitting up in the press box, right? Never, that's when. Kid has issues in Winnipeg, you denying that?

Oof. Maybe you could start a kickstarter to see that the Thompson family doesn't go hungry because of Evander Kane wearing a tracksuit.

He does. They should trade him or have had the foresight to not sign him to his big contract in the first place.

I don't know what you are going on about because it appears we have the same view point.

So...he's more Nik Kulemin than JVR according to this Lawless fellow?  Ehhh...i don't know about that.

Kane scored at a 50+ point pace for the last 3 years. This season he's at a 49 point pace despite apparently playing injured for most of the season. He leads the Jets forwards in even-strength ice-time and he gets minutes on both the PP and PK units. He is definitely not a 3rd line player.

So...you agree with me???

Yeah, well I was disagreeing with Lawless' classification of Kane specifically. Most people laughed at him when he said Kane wasn't a top-6 player. He absolutely is.

cool...agreed.  Would you take him?

Yeah. He might have some personality problems but who knows, getting traded (particularly from a place he clearly doesn't want to be in) might help him mature. Look at Seguin. And the price would be right now too. They'd probably have to move Lupul and his contract first (maybe to Winnipeg) as there would be too much salary devoted to the wings otherwise.

Question is, do the Leafs go after him?

That really depends on the kind of assets Winnipeg would be looking for in return. If they're looking for most NHL ready/experienced pieces, then, yes. If they're looking for picks and prospects, probably not.

Lupul and Santorelli.

Leafs get the best (most potential) piece in the deal. Jets get replacement for Kane the next few years in Lupul and Santorelli for a playoff run.

The reported "first rounder, solid young prospect, a good young roster player" from McLean is ridiculous. I don't see the Jets being able to move him for anywhere near that with the current issue being so public.

My money is he ends up a Ranger.

A statistical look at whether or not Kane is a top-6 forward (answer, yes):

http://jetsnation.ca/2015/2/4/why-evander-kane-is-a-top-6-forward

I wonder if the Leafs could pick up him and his former linemate Alexander Burmistrov. Many feel that he would want to return to the NHL next season. I don't know what it would take trade-wise, but let's assume that Lupul and Bozak go out in some way and those two enter:

JVR-Kadri-Kessel
Nylander-Burmistrov-Kane

It's certainly a very young top-6, but there's potential there for success. Maybe pick up somebody up for the 2LW spot but I think that the Leafs intent to have Nylander in the NHL next season and he probably won't be playing a 3rd line role.

Basically they'd be selling low on a very good asset who a lot of people have either out of whack expectations for or who don't understand average production rates for lines 1-4 in the NHL.  Hopefully Shovelonmydayoff (sp) does too.

Yup. This is basically why the Leafs set up their analytical department.

Even recently Ray Ferraro, who people seem to think is a very sharp mind, was calling ROR a "2 minus or a 3 plus C" and that a 2 C has to be 60+ points despite only 21 centres reaching 60+ points last season.

JVR for Kane and this year's first?

I'd try and move a lot of players before JVR but if they'd do that deal I'd do it in a heartbeat (they won't IMO), as long as virtually everyone else was moved too.

NHLJets: Coach Maurice announces Kane needs surgery on his shoulder. The usual timeline for recovery is 4-6 months.

It's crazy that he's been playing through that all season long. It's also definitely not a coincidence that he's finally elected to have the surgery now. He's done as a Jet and his value has plummeted. There's definitely concerns around him but another team should be able to get a high-risk high-reward player for fairly little in return.

Mark Stuart when asked today about Kane.  Helpful reminder, especially in Toronto, to think about when you see sports writers or reporters discussing what goes on in the room.

?I know you guys love this stuff. Which is fine. It?s your job. But ? and I?m not trying to insult you guys ? but you have no idea what goes on in this room. You may hear stories once in a while, but that?s the way it should be ? things shouldn?t be getting out. ? The day-to-day, and over the last three, four years, you guys really have no clue, so it?s hard for you guys to make judgments.?

D'awwww, Winnipeg fans are adorable:

One day I'm sure they'll be a real team with their own rivalries and traditions.
