The Evander Kane Saga -> Traded to Buffalo

Basically they'd be selling low on a very good asset who a lot of people have either out of whack expectations for or who don't understand average production rates for lines 1-4 in the NHL.  Hopefully Shovelonmydayoff (sp) does too.

Yup. This is basically why the Leafs set up their analytical department.

Even recently Ray Ferraro, who people seem to think is a very sharp mind, was calling ROR a "2 minus or a 3 plus C" and that a 2 C has to be 60+ points despite only 21 centres reaching 60+ points last season.

Ha!  So by that very select definition, only 4 teams in the entire NHL (Crosby/Malkin, Pavelski/Thornton, Duchene/O'Reilly/MacKinnon, Krejci/Bergeron) had #2C and O'Reilly was actually one of them, and Colorado happened to have the good fortune of having a spare.

People's perception of what a top line player are is grossly out of line.

#1 forward (1-30) - 65 points, 67 points, 66 points, 69 points, 73 points
#2 forward (31-60) - 56 points, 59 points, 57 points, 57 points, 60 points
#3 forward (61-90) - 48 points, 51 points, 49 points, 51 points, 51 points
#4 forward (91-120) - 41 points, 44 points, 45 points, 44 points, 45 points
#5 forward (121-150) - 37 points, 37 points, 39 points, 38 points, 41 pints
#6 forward (151-180) - 32 points, 32 points, 34 points, 33 points, 35 points

Those are the point totals for the 30th ranked player for each slot over the last 5 full 82-game seasons (13-14, 11-12, 10-11, 09-10, 08-09).

You don't get to build a team with a top line of 80 point players, and a second line of 60 point players.  You get maybe 1 PPG player (2 if you are lucky), 2 0.5-0.7 PPG players and a bunch of guys in the 30 point range on a good team.

Taking it further you have few players who fit that scoring mold AND match up defensively with their offensive production.

The always great Elliotte Friedman chimes in on the topic:

Further to @TSNBobMcKenzie, Jets and Sabres in trade discussions involving Evander Kane. Deal is not done, but heating up.

It'll be interesting to see the price to acquire him.

If anyone has the tools (3 1sts) it's the Sabres. Smart move by them, depending on price.

It'd be nice to see them hold onto all of those 1sts and still manage to add Kane. That'd be incredible.

It's Buffalo. They'll find a way to screw it up.

I don't think that there's much of a reason to believe that they're Edmonton-bad in that sense. I like what Tim Murray's done, although it's mostly been "be as bad as you possibly can be".

Is myers rumored to be part of a kane deal?

McKenzie has said that Myers might be involved, yeah. I don't really get that personally. I know that Myers is Buffalo's biggest trade chip and all, but they need him much more than Winnipeg does. The Jets defence is arguably their biggest strength (assuming they do the right thing and keep Buff there).

They're different than Edmonton, in that I feel like a big part of the issue here will be a meddling owner in Pegula.

DarrenDreger: Huge deal. Hearing Myers Stafford Armia and Lemieux plus a first for Kane and Bogosian as principles of deal getting close btwn Buf + Wpg.

Well, crap.

That's a steal for Buffalo I think. Kane and Bogosian are the two best players in the deal.

I think he learned his lesson to stay back after what happened with Leino.

I think so too.  Bogosian and Myers are the same age (but a big cap hit difference) and Kane will be 24 in August.

Joel Armia was Buffalo's 2011 1st rd pick (16th) - 25 pts in 33 games in the AHL, will turn 22 in May.

Brendan Lemieux was one of Buffalo's 2nd rd picks last season.

1st round pick Jets acquire will be lowest of 3 of the Sabres picks. Very complicated trade. Sounds like an unsigned player from Peg as well
