That would awesome.  Would all but guarantee us another lottery pick next season!

What's the over/under on how many games Roy survives as coach of the Habs?  Success/failure?  Does he make it past the glorified tenure of Mario Tremblay?

A couple seasons of mayhem but I doubt he will be named coach.  It will be Hartley or Crawford.

Roy as GM??

Montreal was officially eliminated from the playoffs last night, the first team in the East to be eliminated this season. The Leafs will be joining them soon, though - any combination of 3 points lost by the Leafs or gained by the Sabres officially eliminates Toronto.

I noticed that.  The final "Nail" in the coffin perhaps?  :P

Gauthier fired.

Montr?al Canadiens ‏ @CanadiensMTL

Pierre Gauthier has been relieved from his duties. The search for a new General Manager is underway.

ZUT!

Far too little and far too late.

On the bright side, perhaps the MLSE board of directors might take the hint.

You see, in some hockey hotbeds, failure is not acceptable and serial failure not even within contemplation.

I'm happy to see him go but I don't really think he had much of a chance to be successful with what Gainey left him with 2 years ago.  They were pretty well destined to sink over the next few years which they did.

The problem is he didn't do anything to help his cause either.  Firing Pearn, Martin, ambushing Cunneyworth, acquiring Kaberle, trading Cammalleri for Bourque, not unloading much at the deadline...that's a pretty disasterous resume.

Glen Sather was given ample opportunity.  He was hired in 2000 and only recently he has turned his team around.

Things take time.  I dont think any GM can be judged in 3 years.  Their draft picks and younger players haven't had enough time to develop and most of their trades are still only a year or two old.

With 5 games left?  They couldn't wait until next Sunday?

I don't get it.

I thought the same thing, then realized, what's the point in waiting for 2 weeks? With the Habs being eliminated this past Sunday, I would have dropped the axe on Monday - since they were clearly planning on letting him go anyway.

Could have been in the works for a number of days and who knows, maybe the timing worked out better for Gauthier himself.

I imagine we've seen the last of Gauthier as a GM in the NHL

Add me to this.  Gives them a jump, however small it may be, in trying to find a replacement.  With a draft to prepare for, they have to get things in order quickly.

I'm having a hard time thinking of candidates though if they are so focused on having a Francophone.
