The Habs Thread - Reloaded

Habs in on Doan?  From a TVA Sports reporter:

Patrick Caisse ‏@patrickcaisse

L'agent de Shane Doan me confirme qu'il a parl? ? Marc Bergevin r?cemment et que "le CH est vraiment dans le coup" #Habs

I did a rough translation and while it doesn't make grammatical sense, I can make out that the Habs are in the running.

I hope they're the team with the 4 year, $30M deal.

A night of firsts for the Habs...1st win of the season, Galchenyuk with his 1st ever NHL goal and 1st star of the game.

In other news, Subban still wants too much money.

And Markov can still pump 'em.

With this contract dispute going on, I can't forget the last segment he did on Sportsnet with the Hockey Central panel.  Millard asked him what he was most looking forward to and all Subban could do is rub his hands together, flash a huge, mischievous grin, and respond with "My first paycheque."

I thought it was a poor and awkward answer.  Seems to be working out for him too.

What do you think the Habs should do?

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, Subban wants a long-term contract while the Habs are offering two years.  They are both far apart in terms of contractual agreements and money, as it stands, $3M gap between the two parties.

The analysts are divided as to what should be done with the Subban situation, with some thinking a trade would benefit the Habs in terms of what they could get in return, while some think Montreal should just re-sign him in their best interests.

i feel like this guy is his own worst enemy ..subban that is ..every time he opens his mouth he finds a way to come across as even more arrogant.  and i love this ...i really really want to play for the habs ..you know if they'll pay me whatever i want ..then you know..maybe you don't really want to play for the habs.

i guess that's part of what makes him who he is though..i just think in this particular instance it seems poisonous much like scorpion that stings the frog(totally not a reference to the french)  ...it's in his nature...

He's no different than any player who thinks they deserve a certain amount of money.  Maybe he's not saying the right things in the press but I don't think he's anymore arrogant than other hockey players.

and yet...they don't all  get a reputation for being just that ...  maybe you feel it's justified which is fine..but i don't think there's any denying that this guy has gained a reputation for being at least cocky ...for a hockey player anyway.

Yeah he's definitely cocky I'll give you that, but in terms of contract holdout he's not the first and definitely won't be the last player to do this.  All depends on whether he backs it up after he gets the big money.  He'll look like a tool if he gets the huge contract and then plays like crap.

Some team could offer sheet Subban up to $5.04-million AAV and only give up two picks: 1st and 3rd. If it's a late first, why not?

Reports out there are saying that the Habs offer hasnt changed since May. 2.2 in year one and 2.9 in year 2 on a 2 year contract for an AAV of 2.55

It's a nice idea but I think Montreal matches a 5.04 million dollar offer. You can say it exposes the RFA system as the sham that it is, and it does, but if a team has no legitimate shot at signing a RFA then it's really not in their best interest to come along and take a shot at another club like that.

Same basic deal that Del Zotto got from the Rags. I don't believe Subban is that far ahead of Del Zotto in terms of on-ice performance, though he probably is in terms of value to his team. I wouldn't say it's as lowball an offer as some are making it out to be.

Kessels contract with the leafs was around 5 million.  I know there was not an offer sheet, however burke threatened one(I doubt Nonis would have the balls for that).  Why did we give up so much for Kessel when we could have got him for a 1st and  a 3rd.
