Some initial thoughts on these numbers:
> Matthews the obvious choice for MVP. He had a spectacular season, not just scoring goals, and never had a letdown. Oveshadowed a really good season by Marner, who now has put up top-10 numbers with both Tavares and Matthews. If Campbell had played a full season with his numbers, then the conversation would be quite difficult, as we'd be talking about the Rocket winner vs. the Vezina winner.
> Nylander had his best season yet as well, and maybe so did Hyman. Tavares and Thornton snapped back nicely. Spezza was full value most every night. Really, all the top-6 forwards played up to or beyond expectations (PP excluded!) except Simmonds, who faded badly, and Mikheyev, who just didn't get it done scoring (but maybe exceeded expectations on the PK?).
> On D, Brodie was clearly the best of the bunch, but all the others except Rielly performed well most of the time. (Dermott I would say is an unsung hero, didn't notice him in a bad way very much.) If the Leafs go deep, it will be because of their vastly improved team defense, which is a credit to Dubas and his summer gets, and to the coaches (whom I criticize below, but they deserve heaps of praise here).
> Nicest surprises: Campbell far and away the most nicest, ousting Bogosian who otherwise would have won it.
> Biggest disappointments: Rielly; as several have said, he used to be an offensive threat and that made up for his defensive shortcomings but his offense has dried up and he's a real albatross on the PP and defending odd-man rushes. I have no idea what happened to him. Just a very bad season. While not even in the same class, I'll just mention Robertson here, who, in his limited time, didn't really do anything. I know some people were hoping he'd carve himself a place in the line-up. Now it looks like he's not even in the conversation to get into a playoff game. Yes, small sample size.
> Coaching: Well, Keefe seems be widely praised for trying different set-ups and managing the team pretty well overall. The Achilles heel here is the disastrous collapse of the PP. I think this is basically entirely attributable to coaching. They were never going to keep up 33% but to have it go so spectacularly wrong, for so long, is on the coaches. This is worrying; despite what some commentators have said I don't think you can have a long run in the playoffs with a PP that barely exceeds the SHGs you give up.
