The Official 2011/2012 Armchair GM thread

I'm a little surprised to see Edmonton is almost 10 mil over the cap floor, wonder if they're in the market to shed some salary?

So far the best two players I can think of still available on the free agent market that would solidify the 4th line is Madden and Grier and I think I'd be happy if the Leafs could sign both of them for decent 1 year deals.

Drury on a cheapo?

Not sure about his health or whether he'd embrace a 4th line role. If healthy and like you say, cheap, maybe.

He had a terrible time with injuries last year (though they weren't horrible injuries). But I believe it got to the point he was a healthy scratch at times. He did play all five playoff games as a 4th liner (10 mins or so per game - 12th among forwards).

He was really classy and decent about it and the media spoke well of him about the effort he made right to the end. So the key to me would be his health - if he was still playing with an injury that hurt his game even after he returned. If not, he's probably as good as done (though he still did well in the faceoff circle).

Hurm, maybe that answers the '4th liner' question a bit. I'd want some pretty solid evidence saying he was healthy before signing anything.

Additionally, neither he or Madden are particularly big, something the Leaf brass have claimed to be looking for.

Yeah, Aulie showed up against Hartnell pretty fair last year and the other 3 can handle the rough stuff too if needed but frankly I don't care if the Leafs have a player in an enforcer role who contributes nothing else, Orr seems completely unnecessary, never mind one who plays defence, I agree with Carlton there.

Clarkson seems a like a bit of an expensive cap hit to me for what he brings and I wouldn't trade my hat for Carkner.

The problem with your defence being fighters is you don't want your d-men in the penalty box, especially your top four.  Its one reason why Phaneuf turns down fights at times. He gets knocked for it but clearly the message is that they don't want him in the box for 5 straight mins, especially if the offsetting player is some goon or 4th line hack.

I'm not saying you have to have an Orr at all times but you can't assume top 4 d-men will be the ones who can do the dirty work on a game by game basis.

Just reread that post of mine and I could have been clearer, when I said I agree with Carlton it wasn't about Orr it was about his opinion of defencemen fighting regularly ( in spite of being able to do so ) so I agree with you too CF.

How about Blake Comeau from the Isles?

Guys only 25 years old, good size (6'1', 205 lbs), scored 24 goals last year.  Here's what an Isles fan had to say about him:

He's streaky, like any third liner. Has good goal scoring touch and can play the 2nd line if needed.
He's one of our best pk'ers if not the best. He has good size, skates average and is still i believe 25
I honestly dont want to lose him but many core players were signed back in june so im thinking there going to move him

He said they need a top 4 D-man in return.  We have an adbundance of D and Comeau would be a real nice addition.  He would probably work out really well with Bozak and Armstrong on the 3rd line.  He'd add a nice 2-way element, and would instantly become one of our top Pkers.  He's a glue guy.  A guy every team could use and would make a great bottom 6 forward.  Can play on the 2nd line too if injuries arise.

Whatcha think?  I think he could be had for Gunnarsson.  Seems fair.  A 2nd/3rd line tweener for a #4/5 steady d-man.  Both not far apart in age.

I'd really look into this.  He would make a better 3rd liner than Kadri in my opinion.  Problem is what happens to Nazem then?

Similar notion ( I think ) to a suggestion I had with Korpikoski, decent versatile 2nd/3rd liner, excels on pk and a RFA. Problem with Blake is that the Isles are trying to reach the cap floor, problem with Lauri is Phoenix needs his talent ( so go the Isles for that matter ).

What to do with Kadri in that case? Agreed.

I like both Korpikoski and Comeau but I'd rather save Gunnarsson (if Burke wants to move him) as a piece for a a higher end player.

I'm still kind of hoping that Komisarek agrees to go to his hometown team (NYI) as part as an initiative on their part to get to the cap floor.

Sorry for the string here but I was just sifting over the Islanders roster and noticed Jeremy Colliton. He's a defensive depth forward who in 15 GP, took 84 draws, posting an impressive 61.9 FO%. I really know nothing more then that of the player but he could be the kind of guy Komisarek might land us in a get-to-the-cap-floor type move.

If Gunnar was used in a deal like this one ( or another... ) I wonder if Skrastins could be had for a year somewhat cheap to offset on the third pairing? He led Dallas in blocked shots last year and was only 3 seconds pk toi off the leader, Robidas, in spite of his age.

Just a thought.

Why would we have to replace a defenseman?

I doubt we get Comeau for Komi straight up. So:

Komisarek + MacArthur --> Comeau & Colliton
Grabbo + Blacker + spare part --> Stastny + some horrible contract they hate

Lupul - Stastny - Kessel
Kulemin - Connolly - Kadri
Comeau - Bozak - Armstrong
Brown - Mr. X - Frattin

where "Mr X" is Colborne/Colliton/Dupuis/Ziggo/Boyce

Problem solved!  8)

Skrastins signed with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in May

If Gunnar was dealt? To replace the bottom pairing left side D short term was the thought but....

I just meant that we have too many already IMO. If Gunnar was ever dealt, we'd just see lots more of Komisarek.
