The Official 2011/2012 Armchair GM thread

I cling to:
J. Staal for young D man - (Schenn, Franson Gunnarsson) - young roster forward (Bozak, cheap and solid 3rd center Kadri, Frattin), a 2nd tier prospect player Armstrong  and a 2nd tier prospect like Crescenzi would be a good deal for sides.

On a strict talent basis, if you're Pittsburgh would you make that trade?

No, not a chance.

I really hope that the Leafs get J Staal.  The Pens are close to the cap and can't take much salary on besides Staal's $4.0 MIL.  What the Pens could probably swing cap-wise is Kulemin, Bozak and Gunnarsson for Staal.

Yeah, I didn't think so.

Don't get me wrong, I get that Pittsburgh may look to move him for cap reasons or to deal with their concentration of talent at center but that doesn't mean they'll take 60 cents on the dollar. That's the act of a desperate team. The Penguins aren't desperate to move salary the way, say, the Blackhawks were.

I would bet significant amounts of money that if Pittsburgh does trade Staal they'll do so in a deal that will be defensible talent wise. An elite piece will be in the mix.

Would you consider Schenn an 'elite piece' or isn an 'elite piece' the #5 and/or Gardiner?

Good point about the LH/RH d-men.

I think it takes a bit more than that, but Staal is not an elite player so asking for an elite piece doesn't make sense at all to me.  He is a very good player at what he does, but to justify him as anything more than a good 2nd line centre who is strong defensively and stuck behind two franchise centres is about where it stops for me.

other teams could beat that offer for sure but it will depend on what the Pens priorities are.. do they want to save cap space? unload a pending UFA? get some future talent back for him? get a winger or d-man to address a hole and not so worried about cap space?

The only reason he makes sense for the Leafs is because of the two top line offensive wingers they have allow to bring in a more defensive minded guy like Staal.  Otherwise he's not playing on the top line most likely.

I think so as well. He's not flashy, a media darling or highly regarded by the fans because he's not among the scoring leaders. I can also easily accept that he's not a true #1 franchise center. But I think GMs would pay a premium to get their hands on him. He's versatile and so solid defensively.

If I were the Pens GM, he'd be near the bottom of my list for guys I'd want to trade.

As much as I like Schenn, his questionable performance this year and contract hurt his value so no. If I were an opposing GM I wouldn't trade a very good, somewhat established young player if the best asset I was getting in return was Schenn. Schenn seems far more likely to move in a trade like the JVR one, where two question marks are dealt for each other.

Like I said, Pittsburgh isn't desperate. They're going to make a trade that they can look at and think makes them a better team. Nobody wants to give up Gardiner or the #5 but the reality of a trade like this is that a team will have to give something up that hurts.

It's nonsense to try to draw a straight line between the "elite" players and the prospects. A truly elite player would require multiple elite picks/prospects in return as we saw with Nash.

I know nobody is untradable but the more I see of Gardiner, the more I love him. If for some reason he gets dealt this summer, it better be in part for a superstar. Seriously, I think Gardiner is far more valuable than any other "future" we have right now... Our #5 pick included.

A note on HNIC broadcast this afternoon said JVR requires surgery for a torn labrum. Also said Giroux requires surgery on both wrists.

So Vigneault has confirmed Luongo has asked for a trade...

... and reports today read Tampa isn't really interested.

Didn't see that but I've heard that Florida won't be interested either.

Some interesting words from Yzerman there.

"My philosophy is I'm trying to find that Hall of Fame goaltender," Yzerman told 620 WDAE. "But good luck trying to do that, it takes time. We'll find that guy through the draft or unrestricted free agency -- guy isn't there at this time."

I guess Steve realizes that not too many teams are willing to trade their Hall of Fame goalie.

Patience is a virtue. I have my doubts this market has much of that virtue left after what they've been through since the lockout. But I still do.
