The Official 2014 MLB Thread

From Jonah Keri via Twitter:
Matt Kemp just got called out for high-fiving Davey Lopes on his way to second on a double. #smrtbaseball

Ha!

Ha!

The high five makes for the better story, but . . .

jonahkeri: Official scorer corrects the play, says Kemp overslid the bag and was called out on that. Replay looked like the high-five happened though.

That being said, this image of the out being recorded is pretty hilarious:

I thought Stroman pitched well, nice little defensive win.  Even though they stranded a ton of runners, and that triple play was shitluck, at least they proved to themselves they can win the tight games as well without having to hit a bunch of home runs.

EDIT - I guess they still hit 2, but still, they won without having to score a ton of runs then.

The Chicago Cubs have traded starting pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to the Oakland Athletics for 2012 first-round pick Addison Russell, 2013 first-round pick Billy McKinney and pitcher Dan Straily.

There go 2 of the top starters rumoured available in the same trade. Oakland paid a steep price, but just got even better!

(*Ahem*) out of shape??!!

Moment just now in the all-star game that both summed up why Joe Buck is terrible but also what I just don't continue to get about the general problem some baseball types have with even a basic understanding of statistics. Troy Tulowitzki is hitting and they're talking about the year he's having(.345/.435/.613) and Buck says "And don't give me that 'he hits in the thin air of Colorado' stuff. He can hit anywhere"

Tulowitzki this season in Colorado: .417 batting average, 1.246 OPS, 14 homeruns
Tulowitzki away from Colorado: .265 batting average, .830 OPS, 7 homeruns

Tulowitzki's career OPS is 142 points higher in Colorado than on the road. Still, his career OPS on the road(.820) is terrific for a shortstop. So why not say something like "His numbers might be inflated in Colorado but he's a great hitter in any ballpark"? What in the world is the value in not just being wrong but aggressively wrong?

This is pretty funny.  Mets beat writer for MLB.com sent these two tweets out 2 minutes apart today:

@AnthonyDiComo

One of baseball's oddities: #Mets can become the first NL team in 15 years to go an entire season without balking: http://atmlb.com/1v4P1oV

@AnthonyDiComo

OH MY GOD THEY JUST BALKED!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a big baseball fan, but as a sports fan that was beautiful.

Yeah, I'm not a Yankees fan or a fan of him in particular but, well, what can you say? That was pretty great.

When I need to remind myself of a way to dislike him I always look at the Gold Gloves he won for being "good" defensively.  My personal favourite being 2005 when he was a -1.9 dWAR player.

Pretty great way for him to end his career in New York.  Maybe he should sit out the rest of the season now because that's pretty much storybook material.

Eh, as egregious as that is that's not his fault. Managers and coaches vote on the Gold Gloves.

This is from Mike Schur, or Ken Tremendous, who used to run the Fire Joe Morgan blog

Playoff Team Payrolls (Opening Day):

LAD 229m
DET 163m
LAA 154m
SFG 149m
WAS 136m
STL 111m
BAL 107m
KC 92m
OAK 82m
PIT 71m

Payroll, it's no excuse these days.

The A's lost to KC in 12 innings in the AL Wildcard matchup.  All those trades and they still can't win.  Kansas City making the playoffs means the Jays are the only team in the Majors who haven't made the playoffs in the last 20 years.

Giving them the longest active playoff drought in North American major league sports.
