I know some of the vitriol is getting out of hand, but this movie just kind of looks not good?

Green Book is definitely an Oscar-bait type of win this year but I don't think this was a very good crop of movies.  I liked Roma a lot more and think it would have been a better win but I also felt that blackkklansman was pretty heavy handed itself as a movie.

I haven't watched Roma but it's received mixed reactions from all the people I asked who watched it. Either loved or hated.

"Good" is such a relative term with Marvel movies that it seems pointless to get too deep into it before you see one. The big questions are going to be whether or not the setpieces work, if it zips along, if it's "fun"...honestly, stuff that you're just never going to know from a trailer.

It's true.  The trailers just seemed kind of off in the way they were cut.  I won't say its the first movie I have been fairly meh towards coming off the trailer because there have been two Ant-Man movies (movies I actually kind of enjoyed when seeing them) so I'm sure I'll see it at some point.

As for my use of the word good, I'm well aware that we need to evaluate popcorn movies on a different scale than a pure comedy or a drama, etc.  That's stuff that still needs the whole movie to judge whether they work or not, I'm just not feeling a great popcorn movie based on the trailer.  I don't mind Brie Larson, Sam Jackson is always fun and I like Jude Law so there are enough names that should make it an ok watch.  I'm just not seeing something that looks like a movie that is going to be a pretty important piece of the next phase of the MCU (again, based off the trailer alone).

I'm assuming Carol Danvers is going to be especially important given that the Guardians franchise is a bit of a mess right now.

Take this article and it's reviews with caution.  We don't know if these Twitter people actually reviewed the film or it's part of a hype campaign. (Movie opens March 8th and is not subject to a full review yet).

Regardless, have some fun with this:

I think that's another thing. This is largely just going to be scene-setting for future stuff and the next Avengers movie so how well it works as a standalone piece may not be at the forefront of everyone's mind.

All of the people in this article are legitimate film critics. They've seen the goddamn movie.

It's a prequel that has to balance setting the stage for whatever role Carol plays in End Game, as well as answering the questions around why Fury and Coulson started the Avengers Initiative to begin with. Full circle stuff.

I'm actually quite excited to see it. That being said, I usually view these movies with my 10 year old daughter who loves the superhero genre so my excitement is usually based on whether or not I think my kid will like it.

I don't think there are tons of people out there who really need this to tie narrative strings together so they can enjoy the giant CGI fight scenes.

Delighted Free Solo won the documentary oscar. If you haven't seen it, and get a chance to watch it, do.

It's incredible. Some mad man climbing El Capitan in Yosemite with no ropes. Cinematically it's amazing then add in just the madness of the feat

It's interesting, everyone talked about the climbing scenes and as someone who doesn't really do well with heights(even imaginary heights when playing a video game) I thought they'd be tough to watch but I found them strangely inert. Somehow knowing he wasn't going to be falling to his death made them no more tense or thrilling than if I were watching a fictional movie with a death defying stunt where, similarly, I know James Bond or Ethan Hunt isn't going to splatter against the ground.

That said, I thought the stuff about Alex Honnold himself and what kind of person who would do that sort of thing was pretty interesting. I definitely agree between that and marvelling at the technical achievement of shooting the climb that it's worth a watch.

I thought they pulled it off nicely.
