It's not that I can be accused of being highbrow, I thought Johnny Knoxville's "Bad Grampa" was hilarious, but when people go on about Cohen being some sort of modern day andy kaufmann/comic genius, I'm clearly missing it.

I'm with you there. I've liked him a lot more in roles where he didn't write the material or create the character. When it comes to his own stuff, I find there are way more misses than there are hits. He's good identifying good subjects for satire, and even how they should be satirized, but he fails in the execution (at least, in my opinion) most of the time.

I also think, in a lot of ways, the time for his main shtick has passed. The real world has become absurd enough.

I watched it last night, I actually find where it's more successful (well, in making me laugh anyway) is the small bits rather than the big main set pieces. Like for example when he takes the daughter to a tanning salon and she's going for a spray tan. There's a tone card on the wall and he asks "what number for a racist family" and the girl replies perfectly sincerely "Wouldn't want to go beyond a 6 or 7)" (Paraphrased)

Those small digs make a bigger point about how inherent the views are I think.

But some of the set pieces work and some don't.

I'm just amazed he can still get away with even trying them.

Tutar/Bakalova was amazing. Her comedic delivery/timing and range carried the moviefilm. It also helped that she was completely unknown to the American public. I am concerned for her health though considering her exposure to what has turned out to be a COVID hotspot.

The fact that she got into the White House is just proof positive at how stupid and inept the administration is when it comes to anything security related besides telling thugs to beat up peaceful protesters.

Didn?t the GOP get literally infiltrated by a Russian agent because she was a young woman who took an apparent interest in the NRA?

I guess they're going for a multi-verse thing with Spider-Man 3 which feels like a bad idea. I was sort of hoping after seeing JK Simmons at the end of the last one they were just going with "It was great in the Raimi movies, let's just snatch it for ours".

Did you catch any of the Spider-Verse comics? And the Miles Morales movie?

The Tom Holland Spider-Man movies seem to always be used to react to the bigger MCU shenanigans (Civil War, Infinity War Blip).

In this case, I'm guessing Dr. Strange is going to be the conduit story for integrating the new Fox properties recently acquired (mutants, re-absorbing the Netflix characters, etc.). Given Spider-Man's comic book leanings towards clones and dimension hopping, as well as Holland and Cumberbatch's chemistry from Infinity War (science vs magicscience, post-Iron-Man mustachioed mentor of great arrogance), aaaand placating the Sony agreement to get Holland some screentime on the spider-adjacent films (Venom 2, Morbius, Sinister Six?), this seems like the easy choice (already teased in Far From Home). It'll probably pull some younger eyeballs to the older Spider-Man incarnations (Maguire, Garfield) if the news hasn't done so already.

I do think the whole thing looks pretty bloated on paper; Raimi's Spider-Man 3 also did the bloat thing and it landed very poorly. I expect some of these to only be quick cameos (the scheduling!) and serve almost like epilogues to those previous films.

I have and in ways that makes it even sound weirder in that there just was a very critically acclaimed Spiderverse movie.

I guess, just in general, I'm pretty skeptical about plans for the next phase of Marvel movies. It all sounds pretty messy.

I actually used Lockdown 1.0 to rewatch the entire Marvel back catalogue (except the Hulk and Spider-Man movies that aren?t on Disney+) and watching it over they did a surprisingly good job of tying it all together. With not know where it was going at the time of originally watching them there were so many little hints and teases etc throughout that make a big difference on a rewatch.

I?d say this might hopefully work out the same.

Soul just got released on Disney Plus and is the second Pixar movie to skip theatres.  It honestly might be my favourite movie they have made.

That's good to hear. My daughter was just telling me about this one. We'll have to watch it.

Good to hear, planning to watch it tonight.

Wonder Woman 1984 was okay, I guess. Some in the household liked it more than others.

Saw it yesterday, and thought it was absolutely awful. It was pretty clear they were trying to replicate the serious drama/occasional comedy/cool cgi action of the marvel films, but just came across as over the top cheese in all respects. A real waste of Wiig and Pascal.

Yeah. I just didn?t find either of the villains particularly threatening. It never felt like the stakes were particularly high. Big step down from the first one.

It's also bizarre how they set the movie in the 80s and then proceeded to use a bland colour palette.

I was very disappointed with WW1984. Probably more so cos the first WW was pretty good and stood out from most of the rest of the drivel DC have been producing.

It took ages to get going then when it did get going it was like, oh. Ok.

Soul on the other hand was excellent. And a bit like Inside Out and Coco in particular I can see it being a really good movie for helping adults to explain tough life events to their kids through entertainment.

We watched WW 1984 on Monday night. My daughter "enjoyed it" but mentioned right away that the first film was far stronger. I'd have to agree with Arn. There was no depth to the storyline and as mentioned above, the villains were not very threatening.

I know the first WW movie was well received but I kind of found it nothing more than an average Marvel movie to begin with.  Like it wasn't bad, but it got a lot more praise than it probably should have.  Gadot is likeable but I think her acting range is pretty limited and it took the edge off what were trying to be some more dramatic scenes in WW84.  This movie also has the problems that a lot of superhero movies with large timelines seem to struggle with too where she is has more powers and abilities in 1984 than she does in BvS/Justice League.

I finally caught Palm Springs (Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti) on Prime and it was pretty great. Also, if you still haven't seen the USS Callister episode of Black Mirror, correct your error.

I just slogged through the Snyder cut of Justice league.  Not a perfect movie by any means but for a four hour movie that really wasn?t bad at all
