The Official Technology Thread

JohnK's Revenge said:
Like every invention it has its benefits and risks.  How does the technology differentiate between co-conspirators and people who are having an innocuous conversation with a suspect??
It doesn't. It only processes information decisions like that are left to the people who then analyze it.

It creeps me about a bit after watching The Last Enemy, quis custodiet ipsos custodes yadda yadda but it's an interesting development.

Christmas has just passed, where's all the posting about the new technology that people have received?  I'm disappointed!

Gonna be going to NCIX to build a new computer. Can't wait. I haven't been able to play games in years, and I need an upgrade for recording music. Will post sometime next week!

Just bought a whole whack of parts for a new computer. I can't wait to start building it. Unfortunately I'm waiting on a friend to give me a case and PSU for it. I decided to scale down on some of the specs, but not by much

i5 2500k Processor
Maximus IV Motherboard (heard good things!)
Radeon HD 6850
8GB Corsair RAM
1TB Barracuda 7200 RPM Hard Drive
Lightscribe DVD Drive
22" Samsung LED Monitor

My girlfriend bought me an Android tablet for christmas. Its pretty cool but unfortunately i cant get any apps for it. Only Amazon appstore will recognize the device and as a Canadian, i dont have access. Otherwise its perfect for commenting on gameday threads  ;)

#1, have you run any available updates?
#2, you should have the Android Market (just called 'Market') in your list of Applications. Then you just click on the Market icon and go start browsing through hundreds of thousands of apps you can download....

I have an android phone and got my gf the Lenovo Android tablet for xmas.

Im thinking about buying a new computer...mainly because I want a better experience when playing games...and I'm thinking about a few things, I'm gonna check some tests to find the answer to some of these questions, but maybe some of you know.

1. I'm looking for a fast CPU, i'm mainly looking at Intel i7, but are there other similar options that AMD has? Because my experience is that AMD is usually cheaper.

2. What kind of graphic card should I look for? I just know that I don't want one from Intel again, so probably Nvidia or ATI? Anything in specific that I should look for other than memory?

3. I've been thinking about this for a long time, and it's probably a stupid question. But back in the stoneage, like 15 years ago or so, me and my friends always talked about something called 3dfx card, which we used to improve graphics with a pretty good result. Is there something similar today for laptops, or is that usually built in to say a good nvidia or ati-card?

My current computer has an Intel Core 2 Duo, 2,17 ghz, 3GB memory, and for the graphics I think it's 256mb or 512, likely 512 but it's from Intel. It's about 2 and a half years old, still pretty good though.

I'm hearing Windows 8 is going to be 'Gaze' compatible.  Meaning you won't need a mouse or trackpad etc, just control the cursor with your eyes, crazy.

That's the power of the Kinect!

It's funny, I don't think they realized how successful the Kinect was going to be, otherwise, they would have done the Win8 interface differently.  It wouldn't be hard, for instance, to make the windows desktop glasses-free 3D with the kinect, and since typically only 1 person is at a computer at a time, it would work 98% of the time without issue.  But for now, they're stuck with the stupid blocky interface (which, by the way, aggrevated the poop out of me when I tried their beta preview build).

It's beyond aggravating even on their phones. It's complete insanity. I nearly threw my gf's phone out the window for it being so non-intuitive and so damned menu oriented.

Little surprised with the selections of e-pub books at libraries. Unlike the paper version of a new book, you may have to be on a waiting list at the online part of the library, because they may only have 5 copies. I guess it's a licensing thing. I just thought I could download the book, use the for 3 weeks, then it just expires on my Kobo E-reader.

Anyone know of any websites I can check out other then the ones I have googled, including Google books??  ???

It's a license thing.  They have to buy a license for each copy of the book they lend out, and once all their copies are lent out they are "out" of the item until someone returns it.  It's silly really since a digital copy is never "out" but there you go.  There's also some publishers that limit how many times a library can lend out a book before they have to renew it.  So for example, they may say "this license permits you to lend the book 26 times", once 26 people have checked it out, it disappears from the library catalogue unless they re-purchase the license.  There has to be a better system.

Interesting. Thanks.

I mainly used it for essay sources in university, but you can try searching for a book on archive.org.  Just change the dropbox option from 'All Media Types' to 'Text'. They mostly just have academic texts, but if that's not what you're looking for you can still give it a shot. I searched Harry Potter and they had all of those.
