The Official TFC/Soccer thread

Off to the Final!

Thank you Quentin Westberg and Nick deLeon.  They are the reason the TFC is headed to the MLS Championship Game.

First off, goalkeeper Westberg made a crucial save on a penalty shot by Atlanta?s Martinez.  That gave TFC more than a chance to allow Benezet to tie the game after the United FC took an early lead.

Of course, with Atlanta?s formidable offensive juggernaut, Toronto?s defence was pressured from the opening minute in particular Michael Bradley who seemed a step out of line of the United?s midfielders.  Alas, Toronto re-strategized and kept the Unuted FC looking on the outside in, so to speak....

...until Nick deLeon?s marker for the TFC in the later stages of the second half, with a perfect long footer to vaunt Toronto into the lead enroute to the TFC?s 2-1 win Wednesday night in Atlanta.

Toronto coach Greg Vanney clearly outsmarted his coaching opponent in this game as the TFC changed it?s formation strategically to frustrate and stymie Atlanta?s dangerous shooters.  The ensuing result, mucho gracias to deLeon, was a stunning upset of another top seeded team.

Now on to the MLS Final vs Seattle Sounders!  Hip hip hooray!

GO TFC!

I am a staunch follower of the Reds and what they have accomplished this year is amazing, still strange that their opponent in the 3rd Championship is the same Seattle team, so we have the rubber match and we are underdogs for sure.  Vanney has done a great job at adapting his team to the times, wish Bab's was as adaptable.

Fourth time?s not the charm.

Not for the TFC, not this time as the Sounders held off Toronto 3-1 in this MLS Cup Final in Seattle.  A capacity crowd of 69,000+ saw the Sounders hoist their third championship in four years.

When your team scores an own goal (an unlucky bounce there), it doesn?t bode too well.  The TFC seemed to not recover from that faux pas even though they controlled the game up to then with their strategic style, as they had done in previous playoff matches enroute to this championship final.

Alas, the Sounders figured it all out as Toronto?s staunch game fell apart.  The TFC?s Altidore did score in the 92nd minute but the comeback fell short.

No need to go out with heads bowed.  The TFC had been on a 13-game unbeaten stretch dating back to the regular season up to these playoffs all the way to the MLS Cup.  And to think that this team was actually out of the playoff race at one point illustrates the character of the Reds and the excellent talents such as DeLeon, Pozuelo, Osorio, Delgado, Altidore and on and on, as well as Vanney?s coaching & strategizing as well as the entire organization?s desire to continue to uphold a winning tradition.

The Reds made us proud as they became virtually unstoppable.  It took a team like Seattle to do the damage and if there had been any greater time remaining, sure as heck the TFC might just have mounted a comeback.  Never under estimate the Reds!

GO TFC!

Toronto FC?s 2020 season begins February 29 against the San Jose Earthquakes.

It was announced that Captain Michael Bradley will miss four months due to surgery (ankle):

Meantime, Ashton Morgan (defender) signs up with  Real Salt Lake.

Alas, there?s good news as TFC signs Rocco Romeo ?homegrown talent:

Plus, TFC management is looking to sign a ?Designated Player? or DP for short, to help solidify the lineup.  Wonder who it?ll be? An international most likely.

Italian soccer club fines and bans spectators/fans for verbal abuse with their racist chants/nazi-like salutes & semitism, though some have argued that the ban is not punitive enough.

Last October, Italian soccer club SS Lazio were fined $22,000 by UEFA - European Soccer governing body - for breaking Article 14 of the Disciplinary Regulations.

Instead of paying the fine directly, the Italian club?s president Claudio Lotito decided to take a hard line, doing something relatively unusual in Italian soccer.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the club was able to identify the 16 culprits through video footage and sent them individual letters demanding compensation for financial losses incurred by the club.

In the letter - dating January 20 - president Lotito requested approximately $3,500 payment per person over the sanction and additionally banned them from the stadium for three matches.

Looks like forward Pablo Piatti is a no-go for the TFC?s road season opener next week, alongside the sidelined Bradley and Altidore.

Piatti, signed as Toronto?s Designated Player on a one year contract (with options), will be re-evaluated for the TFC?s home opener (March 7).  There is no word on how long he will really be out for pending the medical assessment. Sounds like he comes with a little bit of excess baggage in the injury department.

TFC fans can probably hardly wait to see this maestro of Argentinian wizardry make his debut with the club.

Game 1 is today, without Altidore or Piatti.  Not impressed with Curtis so far, Piatti although would be a superstar in MLS if healthy, is proving otherwise.  Hopefully the Toronto trainer can work some miracles on him.  We do have a couple of home grown talents coming up so maybe one of them will get a chance.

TFC?s rookie midfielder Nigerian Ifunanyachi Achara provided the goal-scoring as Toronto defeated the NYC FC 1-0 in TFC?s home opener yesterday.
Yes, no.99, and yes he knows now who Wayne Gretzky is.

Looks like this kid can be a great one himself, kudo's to his debut.  Also really liking what Richie Laryea on he right wing, he is a great player as well.

Little bit late catching up, but have to say I'm a little jealous. Madrid is on my travel bucket list.

Went to bed last night, hit the record button for the TFC game, all excited to watch this AM, turned on the recorded event and no game. This Covid thing is starting to piss me off, Oh that started about 4 months ago.

TFC down Montreal 4-3 yesterday, led by "a hat trick by the Reds? 20-year-old scoring sensation Ayo Akinola". Kid has scored 5 goals in the last 2 games.  Sort of gives us some breathing space if Altidore is injured/traded or moves on next season.
