TOP 5 PICK!!!

Usually, I'm all for taking the best talent, but we really need to cheat a little bit... Time to draft a forward

It's not like this organization has the patience to draft a young d-man and let him develop in the Marlies for a couple years.

Considering how long Burke has taken to find a #1 centre his only real choice is to draft a player that hopefully becomes one.

OH and.... Blacker, Mikus and Holzer say hi.

Well, top 3 centres are Grigorenko, Galchenyuk and Faksa. If in the worst case scenario Leafs end up "only" with Faksa, it would be very promising prospect anyway.

I've heard varying things about Faksa -- some say he'll top out at a 2nd line center.  To be honest, I think the leafs need a little more talent than that if this draft pick is going to make much of a difference to them.

How does Forsberg slot in the overall rankings?  I see he's ranked #1 for European skaters, but is he considered a top prospect overall?

And Forsberg.  Why he keeps going unnoticed is beyond me. He might be the best one of them all.

Faksa Faksa Faksa.... I think Alan Walsh (his agent) has been working overtime to plug his client.

He is very high and for whatever reason, seems to be going unnoticed a lot.

Redline has him 2nd overall
McKeen's has him 5th
ISS has him 4th
Craig Button has him 3rd
NHL CSB has him #1 European

Pretty darned high.

And none of these lists have Faksa in the top 15, btw.  :P

As I said, Forsberg seems a nice choice too... The nice thing about that is maybe he goes 3/4 in which case it opens up another nice player for the Leafs. - Should be a fun draft to watch.

Assuming nothing crazy happens between now and draft day, this is how I think it goes down.

My top 5 mock:

1. Columbus: Yakupov
2. Edmonton: Murray
3. Montreal: Forsberg
4. New York: Dumba or Rielly
5. Leafs: Galchenyuk

$10 says Grigorekno falls to around 8th - 10th

Isn't he a winger though? I know drafting for position isn't the best strategy, but I think a lot of people could be forgiven for preferring a centre this year. That said, I wouldn't be thrilled with Faksa at 5/6.

Galchenyuk vs Forsberg is a tougher call though.

Talking to Habs fans they seemed fairly high on Grigorenko so I figured they would shoot for him (assuming they follow the Habs more closely than I would and have heard his name mentioned by scouts etc).  No fans really know what the team would lean towards but I figured their educated guess would be better than mine.

#3 depends on whether Montreal hires Roy between now and then I would think (and his true opinion on Grigorenko too)

I'd be hesitant to pass on Grigorenko if he was available at the Leafs pick. That talent is exactly what the Leafs need, but I can't speak to his potential attitude issues though.

Even with the Pat Roy endorsement? ;)

I think it could depend on whether or not the Habs actually Roy on board as coach or GM for next season. If they do, my guess is they definitely go with Grigorenko.

We might be Ok here because Roy's pick with the new Nordiques will be much lower...

There's actually a decent number of Habs fans who think that Galchenyuk will be their pick. The reasoning is that he's more of a Timmins player (he's their head scout) and also some "whispers" from inside the organization. That could really mess with Toronto's draft plans (or mine at least). If the Habs went with Grigorenko I think the Islanders would draft a defender leaving Gally for us. But if they decide to draft Galchenyuk I don't think New York can pass on Grigorenko which would take the top-2 centres off the board before we pick.

There is that something about a Russian centre with attitude and work ethic problems that makes the Islanders a natural fit.

Then trade down and get Gaunce?

I'd go with a defencemen. We have enough 2nd liners in our system.

Ah I thought he had higher potential than that.
