"Hello? Hello? They hung up..."

slapshot said:I know I am probably going to get dissed for this, but here's a trade deadline move that no one would expect, but I think would make sense for the Leafs, if the Dallas Stars were to slump badly over the next few weeks and get surpassed by teams on their heels - Jason Spezza. Now hear me out, before you totally pan the idea.
1. He would be essentially a rental and the Leafs still have the cap space.
2. As a 4th line centre, he has size, good on face-offs and offensive talent, could slot into second line PP for some extra minutes.
3. Another hometown boy from Mississauga.
4. Turns 36 this summer, may not get another chance at a cup. Highly unlikely if he resigns with Dallas. This could be a great kick at the can for him.
5. Would probably drive Sens fans a bit crazy to see him lifting the cup in a Leafs uniform.
6. He could wear either 90 stars number, or even better 19, old sens number and former number of Paul Henderson, last Leafs to score a huge series winning goal. Spezza score cup winner for Leafs, haha. Also, 19 is reverse Tavares number, two added centres to secure cup.
I like to dream, but that would be pretty cool. If Stars were to drop out, the ask might be reasonable. But if they are in the heat of a playoff run, probably never happen with all the craziness that went on there this year. Oh well, just thought I toss this out there...

I think we saw the real Matthews in the last game before the break, he was really into it. Nothing to worry about at all.hockeyfan1 said:dekedastardly said:Well AM34 is looking like an Alexandre Daigle these days and while clearly stacked up front, in the back end they are not. Just about every player from past to present has undergone some sort of a slump, be it minor or major, and Auston is no exception.
To suggest that his value to the team has diminished somewhat on account of this slump is silly, let alone ridiculous, to say the least. And he is no Alexander Diagle neither nor in the making.
Maybe some of us fans are too demanding of some of this extremely skilled young talent, to win the Cup after so long. That is understandable up to a point, but what isn? t is for someone to demean the accomplishments in their quest for hockey?s holy grail, something that this franchise hasn?t been able to do, up until the organizational changes brought about all the wonderful ways we?re seeing the Leafs blossom to the point that they have.
Be positive!
12. Timothy Liljegren, Maple Leafs: It would probably be more fun to put Kasperi Kapanen in this slot but there was a bit of cold water thrown on that idea when floated to a few sources.
One executive said he thought a Kapanen deal was more likely in the summer, if at all, citing the fact that Kapanen has shown an ability to score in the playoffs, something the Maple Leafs will value.
Instead, a source suggested the Maple Leafs might prefer to use Liljegren to make a significant move, in part because of the emergence of Rasmus Sandin.
?Sandin has done a good enough job to justify keeping him over Liljegren,? the source said.
The one consensus was that at some point, either now or in the summer, Toronto GM Kyle Dubas is very likely to move a young piece of the puzzle in Toronto.
?I don?t care what Kyle Dubas says, there?s no way they can keep them all,? said an executive.

It's a shame teams are only allowed to keep one good defence prospect. They should really look into that in the next CBA.
Regardless though, as you said this was from earlier this year discussing what the Leafs would be willing to move to make a big trade. They made their big trade and for whatever reason Liljegren wasn't involved. I doubt there's another big trade coming up so he's not going anywhere for now.

Well, we heard this last year. It scared the crap out of us. Nothing came out it. But here it is again.

CarltonTheBear said:Yeah if Zaitsev/Jensen were involved that'd certainly change things. I'd still be trying to get Detroit to eat as much of Glendening's contract as possible. Or you know, just not include him and stick with a Zaitsev/Jensen swap haha.

Well, yeah, avoiding taking Glendening is clearly the preferable option, but, at least moving Zaitsev out in a deal that brings him in clears close to $3M in cap space going forward. I might even be able to get behind a straight Zaitsev for Glendening swap - but, that's the extent of it.
digdug said:As far as I can tell the Red Wings have absolutely no cap space right now so they couldn't take Zaitsev unless they trade similar salary to the Leafs
