Trade deadline moves

The Leafs can't afford to pay anyone 1.8 mill on the 4th line and that's why Brown will be moved.

I?m wondering if they?re going to try and package Brown, Zaitsev and Gardiner in a deal or separate deals to both free up space and try and secure another D-man and a 4th line forward with a bit of sandpaper.

I?d be pretty surprised if they moved Gardiner.  That would be a lot of people moving in and out that would have to adjust to each other and the system before the playoffs.

Of course, moving Zaitsev in a package with brown, I?d understand.

Glendenning coming back seems crazy capwise.

I thought they wanted to add "heavy" type players for the 'offs.  Glendenning is billed as "scrappy" in that tsn.ca piece.  T. Moore already fits that description, does he not?

This doesn't make any sense other than to please Babcock.

I can't believe the Glendenning rumors are true.  I guess Babcock really does love him or else he's the one leaking this

So it looks like the Leafs have added a 1st line winger to the 3rd line just ahead of the deadline without giving up anyone on the roster.

3 lines going at the same time, the scenario we been dreaming of since July 1.

Still need to switch Marleau with Johnsson. The Matthews line is all him and Kappi.

24. Carl Hagelin?s only got eight points in 38 games, but a lower price tag may tempt someone for a competitive guy with a good playoff history. Buffalo looked at it.

The Kings would probably have to retain salary here, but I'd be interested in this if the price was right. Hagelin-Lindholm/Goat-Brown would be a solid 4th line.

Honestly, with the way the season is shaping up I'm thinking the Leafs are pretty near my limit of not having much in the way of actual assets to move for short-term help. Unless the cost is very much of the "unlikely to ever seriously help the team or even the prospect base" level, I sort of hope they're done.

(Unless, I suppose, if the price involves Zaitsev)

Yeah. Other than a 6th round pick for a veteran bench guy or the like, I suspect the team doesn't do much of anything until the offseason.

I'd be fine with dangling one of our two 4th rounders. Last season Tommy Wingels was traded for a 5th round pick. Patrick Maroon was traded for a 3rd round pick. I think considering the season he's having Hagelin falls in between those two ranges. It would entirely surprise me if another team gave up more just based off reputation but that's how high I'd go.

Next season I don't expect the Leafs to be active at the deadline in any way. They'll be right up against the cap all season and because they'll be into LTIR they won't really be gaining cap space as the season goes on so even at the deadline things will be tight. So I'm ok with trying to make some short-term moves like this knowing we won't be active next year.

So does anybody think they'll trade Gardiner?  The path to re-signing him is pretty narrow.

They won't trade Gardiner.  They know he is going but they will keep him thru the playoffs.

Just like Bozak and JVR last year.

I think the Leafs could trade Gardiner but if they did I don't think it would be your typical deadline deal where a veteran on an expiring contract is dealt for a pick and a prospect sort of thing.

What I could see is a three team thing where Gardiner goes to Team A who gives Team B a pick/prospect package who gives the Leafs maybe a minor future asset and maybe a decent NHL capable RHD.

It's unlikely but it could be a way to get something for Gardiner without looking like you're giving up for this year.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about this trade personally, but something around Gardiner for Tyler Myers could make sense for both teams. Similar cap hits, both pending UFAs, neither team can probably fit them back in next season. Toronto's strong on the left and weak on the right, Winnipeg's weak on the left and strong on the right.

Rielly-Myers
Muzzin-Zaitsev
Dermott-Hainsey

Would give Winnipeg a top-4 of:

Morrisey-Trouba
Gardiner-Byfuglien

Winnipeg's other lefties are Dmitry Kulikov and Ben Chariot, neither of who are top-4 guys.

Get on the phone to Dubas. I'd do that, especially if they're not trading him for assets, or RHD with term.

Doing this is a great way to keep overall talent!

Part of a post I made on the Marlies board:
However Rosen had 3 assists yesterday and leads the AHL in Defensive scoring..I am sounding like a broken record here but I don't see him being any worse than Bad Jake TM and we are going to lose Jake for nothing just like JVR and Bozi.

I hate to burst your bubble H but if you think Rosen is equal to Gardiner or even close to it then you're overrating him immensely and setting him up to fail next season when he does play with the team.
