Fraser mclaren goes to x-ray for a possible broken finger after getting slashed. #TMLtalk

aw, shucks

A Carter Ashton slash eh? I guess there's more than one way to secure a spot on the big club.

Am I in the minority if I'm hoping that Colborne makes it as a winger or centre over Ashton? I just feel he has way more skill (his passing is elite IMO).

Elite eh?

From what I've seen, yeah. The rest of his game isn't really all that exciting. In fact, if it weren't for his passing skills I doubt he'd be considered much of a prospect at all.

McLaren really shouldn't rush back. Take 3-4 months off, make sure that finger is really, really healed before even returning. Then since he'll have missed most of training camp, he should take another 2 months off to get back into top skating form. Then another 3+ months practicing his boxing skills so he can get back into top heavyweight form.

So hopefully, if the Leafs play it safe he'll be ready to play around the first week in July.

You must not go to the gym much.

I confess, when it comes to the health of the back I've typically gotten my information from doctors and not guys at the gym.

I agree with Rebel. There's tonnes you can do to strengthen your back and help prevent injuries, chronic or new.

And I confess, my information also comes from my doctor and chiropractor. I haven't consulted guys at gyms though.

Do you really think that the issue with Lupul is that he's not doing enough to keep in good shape? Or an exercise problem? We've all seen him naked, it's not a matter of too many cheeseburgers.

And somewhere, LHF's phone just exploded with alerts.

You can end up with a bad back from having the wrong insoles in your shoes.  Bend over and pick up 10lbs, you're putting over 1000lbs of pressure on your spine.  Lupul's bad back could be from anything, and been developing for years.

Nope, I don't think that at all. I'm assuming he's in fantastic shape and has the advice of a whole team of professionals, including chiropractors, physiotherapists, and medical doctors. I was just responding your statement that there's really nothing you can do to strengthen a back. No more, no less.

Right. Well, then to make things clearer that statement was meant to be related to Lupul in some way. Sorry for the confusion.

Time for the easiest part of any coaches job, the cuts.

http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=682891

Forwards Sam Carrick, Andrew Crescenzi, Jerry D?Amigo, Josh Leivo, Greg McKegg and Brad Ross, defencemen Petter Granberg, Dylan Yeo and Zachary Yuen, and goaltenders Christopher Gibson and Garret Sparks have all been assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Forwards Frederik Gauthier (Rimouski ? QMJHL) and Ryan Rupert (London ? OHL), as well as defenceman Kevin Raine (Sudbury ? OHL) have been reassigned to their respective junior clubs.

No real surprises.

The Marlies training camp begins tomorrow, which explains the timing here.

I'm a little bit surprised that Granberg was sent down, particularly over a guy like Kevin Marshall. We haven't seen Marshall yet in a game so maybe the Leafs want to play him once first but he's not really a guy with any NHL future.

D'Amigo was sent down while Broll, Biggs, Devane, Ashton, Ryan, and Bodie are all still at training camp. Obviously I can't say for sure but I think that says something about what the Leafs think of him. He's only 22 but this season will be pretty make or break for him I think.

So that makes 21 cuts thus far?

We had close to 60 bodies at camp, how long before we see more cuts?

EDIT: 37 Remaining, I wonder if the next cuts will be after Thursday's game.

37 left in camp. (21F, 13D, 3G)

14-18 cuts remaining

This is how I see it:

Locks for the NHL roster:

Bolland
Bozak
Clarkson
Kadri
Kessel
Kulemin
Lupul
McClement
van Riemsdyk
Gardiner
Gunnarsson
Phaneuf
Ranger
Bernier
Reimer

I'd say the following 11 will almost certainly be re-assigned

Abbott
Ashton
Biggs
Broll
Devane
Ryan
Smith
Blacker
Marshall
Percy
MacIntyre

Then 3-7 of the following will be re-assigned/traded/cut/waived etc., depending on the roster size they decide on and what happens with Franson

McLaren
Orr
Raymond
Brennan
Holzer
Rielly
MacWilliam
Liles
Bodie
Colborne
Fraser

Based on what I've been reading I might switch Ashton and Holzer on your list, and is Orr not a lock (tell me he's not and I'll be quite happy actually)?

Yeah, Orr is probably a lock too.

Edit: upon closer inspection, I'd move MacWilliam and Holzer to the sure cuts list.

Rielly needs to go back no matter what he does in camp.  I'm not in favor of even keeping him around for any real games ... it just muddies the waters.  Only the rarest of the rare d-men can or should make the jump right to the NHL.
