That Morrison quote is just typical half-baked sportspeak.  Why would any GM put a player on the roster if he didn't think he could help the team win?  "Yeah, let's put Grinder X on the squad, even though we don't think he'll really add anything...."

They already do that.

No, they don't.
They may not think it, but they do.

That's my exact point.

I don't think there is a problem with having a guy with Rielly's skill in the NHL right away.  His passing and on-ice vision are on par with the NHL speed (at least in preseason).  His defensive game is going to be a bit of a mess though.  He's not a gifted defensive player AND he has a long way to go in terms of developing an adult NHL body.

But I think you run into a problem when you create roster spots for young guys at the expense of other players who are better today.  Rielly still has a lot of things to work on in his game.  I would love for him to go back to junior hockey and develop a better approach in the defensive zone.  I wouldn't mind seeing him work on his shot a little more to complement his sensational passing ability, and I wouldn't mind just giving him a little more time to finesse his skating in a league where he isn't going to get creamed by punishing hits in the defensive zone.

Wasn't sure where to post the update, but Bernier doesn't have any sort of structural injury, just a skin irritation on his knee caused by new goalie pads.

He's obviously soft.  Doesn't bode well for a Randy Carlyle team.

Burke wouldn't put up with this.

Sort of like a boo-boo on his knee?

In the small amount I've seen, I do love his passing.  So accurate.

I do think he's going back though.

Quick question: how would you guys rate Rielly compared to Gardiner? I haven't seen as much of him as the rest of you so I'm curious.

Where did you hear or read that? I haven't read that anywhere...

A few of the Leafs guys on Twitter brought up the injury a little while back and Yahoo has him being sent down on the 15th. He's also not listed on the Leafs roster on the team's official site, whereas everyone else still in camp is.

Well.. there`s another opportunity wasted.. I feel as though he has the skill to compete at the NHL level, but these injuries keep getting in the way.

Perhaps he gets called up during the season.

He might, but, realistically, he's a 4th liner at the NHL level right now, and may not be much more than that in the future either. He's probably lower down the list of potential call ups.

Percy and MacWilliam have been sent to the Marlies. That leaves Phaneuf, Gunnarsson, Gardiner, Liles, Ranger, Fraser, Holzer, Brennan, and Rielly as the defencemen at camp. Considering the Clarkson suspension, Brennan and his cheap contract likely have a good chance at sticking around for opening day.

I was hoping we'd keep Percy around, I was reading nothing but really positive stuff about him.
