Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

That's something I don't understand about LTIR. If the Leafs are going to be into it all season long why does it matter if they're into it a little or a lot? Obviously there's a reason otherwise they wouldn't have traded for Clarkson or kept Liljegren up now but it's beyond my comprehension.

I wouldn't really lose any sleep trying to figure out all the intricacies. Basically, when the Leafs initially place all their players on LTIR they want to be as close to the cap as humanly possible without those players. That's how you maximize the amount of LTIR cap space you get for the entire season. Once that initial process is done then you're right if they're into the LTIR all season it doesn't matter if they're into it a little or a lot.

Doesn't this mean that they will be over the cap when Dermott and Hyman return? Hyman makes more than Shore, and thus puts them over. Or not?

They currently have a 23-man roster. When Dermott and Hyman (particularily Hyman) return they'll need to drop to a 21-man roster to get them under the cap.

Liljegren's still on the roster too. Maybe that's for cap/LTIR-ish reasons though. I doubt they have him sit in the pressbox.
It is. The Leafs have to get as close as possible to the Cap to get the maximum LTIR benefit. With these players the Leafs sit at 81,489,160...That's 10,840 away..

The Leafs are currently carrying a 23 man roster. When the season starts and when Hyman comes back, they won't be carrying 23. Most likely 21 and sometimes 20. They have room for him. Dermott is much easier as he just gets swapped with Marincin or Holl. Their salaries are closer.

Yeah, I do think this is why Liljegren is still there then. His higher than league minimum salary means the Leafs can maximize slightly more of the LTIR benefit than having a guy making $700k around would. Wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him sent down sometime later this week.

Even closer than what that guy tweeted.

Also, Liljegren on the roster still is for cap/LTIR calculation reasons AND if they wanted to claim someone on waivers he could be sent down tomorrow without having to clear waivers.

It gives me confidence in their expertise when I see them doing this.

Interesting.  I keep repeating the benefits of having Liljegren be there just in case they claim someone- however, the person they claim HAS to be very close in salary to him for it to make sense.  Claiming someone that makes 700k means they lose 163k in LTIR Room.

Just went to Tim Hortons, picked up my first ever NHL card pack.

It's a sign!

Bob McKenzie was just on Overdrive and outlined some more cap shenanigans that the Leafs could pull this year in calling up guys and not having them count on the cap. I didn't really follow cause I'm sick as a dog today but I'm sure the audio will be up soon
