Training Camp Thread - Currently with Marner now

Most people find it easy to play with Willy and Johnsson; Matthews is no exception.

Going from Marleau and Ennis to those guys is really going to cause Matthews to explode all over the place.

The more he plays with them, the longer he'll be able to sustain and consistently repeat elite output.

He's probably been guilty of being a little selfish while plowing his trade as a NHL goal scorer so far. I think with the right partners though his giving game will see new heights.

As Babcock said earlier this year, "the comfort in himself and his ability to share himself with his teammates [...] has gotten better and better as time has gone on, which you would expect from a young man."

On the Staff and Graph podcast recently, Rachel Doerrie shared her experiences at training camps while working with TOR and NJD.

Coaches don't really start to instill structure and game plans until the camp roster is cut down to basically the final team + positional battles, hence the sloppy game play for the first 4-6 preseason games (and into October really).

Game in 6 - TOR @ OTT Wednesday, Sept. 18th - Matthews 2 goals and superb chirp.

Whatever the case, Babcock is giving him a chance to prove he belongs now. The Leafs coach could have opted for Jeremy Bracco, Pontus Aberg or Trevor Moore to start with Kerfoot and Mikheyev (and may still do so) but turned instead to Petan. His exit meeting with Babcock didn?t last very long when it went down last spring. Babcock told him he was a welcome addition, but that he already had his ?guys? when Petan came aboard in February in a deal that sent Par Lindholm to Winnipeg. He?d heard good things though. It was the kind of uplifting message Petan probably needed to hear, especially after how brutal last year undoubtedly was for him.

This pull quote is very telling, re: Babcock's 'stubbornness'. He's extremely process driven.

Come on...

edit: Kristen added that it's Lindgren on defence there, not Liljegren.

Goat tracker is back for 2019

And it's just setting Spezza up to fail there, no way you can have him and Goat on the same line. Too slow. Very curious to see how this ends up playing out.

I can see the logic behind wanting to try this in the preseason.

Gauthier looked faster (again). His stride has lost a lot of excess movement and that added efficiency is compounded by how long he is. I still think he has next to no offensive instincts but he is super solid defensively, which would ease the load on Spezza and just let him try to bank something in off Moore?s rear. Spezza covers Gauthier?s faceoff weakness too.

But Agostino - Spezza - Shore is also tangibly better, especially with Moore mixed on the wings.

I'm sorry, but messing around with Gauthier is a complete waste of time.    That said, I think signing Spezza was also a mistake.  They need to find a 4C who can hold his own in the faceoff circle AND play defense AND PK.

Nick Shore?

Is messing with Gauthier really a waste of time? If we don?t want him anymore, isn?t it worthwhile to give him more eyeball time and key up a better trade? Or a better opportunity to get scooped on waivers because he?s been a good soldier for Dubas and deserves a chance to play somewhere?

Tampa trying to squeeze down two goalies through waivers. Might be worth a flier on either one!

Condon 2.4M.  Not happening.  You'd have to trade one of Kappy/Mango/Kerfoot to fit him in.
Domingue 1.15M.  I believe his 450k more than Hutch would mean only carrying 18 skaters once Hyman returns (I don't think even the cheapest 19 salaries would fit) (again, unless a trade happens)

Domingue could be an interesting option but we can't fit his cap hit in ($1.15mil). Condon's pretty bad and we definitely can't fit his cap hit ($2.4mil).
