Training Camp

Good article on Rielly's experience at camp.

It was a development the teenager himself didn't believe initially.

"It was obviously a pretty cool experience when I came in," said Rielly, picked fifth overall by the Leafs in last June's draft. "He told me we were partners, but I thought he was kidding at first. I was like, 'Whatever.' But I checked the roster and it was true so it was pretty cool. He helped me a lot on the ice, kind of chatting with me and trying to give me some confidence and it helped a lot."

The decision to put the kid and the captain together came after Rielly and head coach Randy Carlyle had a chat following Tuesday's practice.

"I had a conversation with Morgan Rielly about getting him to play more of his game," Carlyle explained. "I asked him what his strengths were and he said his number-one strength was his skating so I said, 'Well, I don't know if we've really saw you skate in the first couple of days. We saw you skate and pass the puck, but not really get up on your toes and get up the ice.' And maybe there wasn't much of an opportunity to do that, but I thought it was important that he feels comfortable and plays to his strengths."

"He was open with me and asking me how camp's going and how I've been playing and he was extremely helpful," said Rielly. "He just wanted to chat. I think he understands I'm 18 and, you know, it's a pretty hard experience with all these guys. He was extremely open."

So, pretty much the opposite of how Ron Wilson would handle this.

Carlyle on Kadri: "He's proven he has NHL skills... He's been one of our strongest players at camp... We'd be crazy not to recognize that."

Sounds good, Carlyle with an open mind.  For whatever reason I always got the sense that Wilson and Burke were really down on Kadri.  Maybe it's just the way the press chose to report it.

Carlye says Kadri has the skills - sounds like he will be in opening day lineup - but wonders if he can do it consistently in all parts of his game. I like Carlye - seems like he would be a good teacher of the game and have patience and communication that Wilson never had.

He also says that the lineup is already set in his mind. I would then expect the cuts to come today.

Finally he says the net is a tough decision. I imagine that Scrivens is outplaying Reimer, but they also want Reimer to be the # 1 guy.

Fantastic news, great stuff.

Very interesting situation going on here.  Even though the front office is unchanged, there seems to be a green light for those who made personnel decisions that have turned out poorly to be the very ones to correct them.  After all, Burke wasn't running this team by himself.

Wonder if Komisarek has anything to worry about.  ::)

I was thinking the same thing. It appears Nonis is far more willing to admit a mistake. Komi might be playing for the Marlies. (I was going to
say "starring for the Marlies" but knew that would bring a response.. ;). I wouldn't buy out Connolly as Vancouver may be silly enough to pick him up. Regardless his contract expires after this year and
Leafs should save their financial clout to trade for and buy out someone else's mistakes - for a hefty price of course.

Not without his permission, he won't be.

Ohhh he has a no-move?........well to be fair he has a no-play right now too.

This talk of Burke not fixing a mistake seems a bit revisionist, I can think of a few quick changes he made to that end and it's not like he got a meaningful chance to change anything this season before he was fired.

Would it not be prudent for them to buy him out and let him try and play somewhere else?

It wouldn't really benefit the Leafs at all. More prudent to keep him in the organization as depth if no trade can be worked out.

Seems like a prime candidate for a trade where the Leafs retain salary and/or cap space. He had a bad year, but he's still got lots of talent and good offensive and defensive awareness.

Maybe, but unless the return is more than a mid-round pick, I'm not sure the team goes for it this time. Teams can only have 3 retained salary transactions on their ledger at any one time, so, it would have to be worth it to the Leafs for them to further limit that option going forward. He's more valuable to the team as depth and as a veteran presence for the Marlies now that Aucoin is gone.

Regarding the three retained transactions - when Lombardi's deal drops off this year they do regain that transaction space correct? Seems like a stupid question but you never know...

Yes. It's limited to having 3 on the ledger at any one time. Once one expires, another can be added.

True enough. In particular, having two such deals now would only allow them to make one similar deal at the trade deadline. Maybe there's more interest then in a veteran centre like Connolly after injuries and such?

I feel bad for him going to the Marlies, because he's an NHL-calibre player. Just being overpaid in comparison to his recent production.

I don't think it's about the money. They just don't think he's a better option than Bozak.

Geez Busta, did you actually attend the CBA meetings this year, possibly having a hand in writing it?  :) You seem prepared for all line of questioning this time around.

I paid a lot of attention to what was going on in the relevant areas. I'm looking forward to reading the new CBA if/when they release it to the public.

Busta is actually Burke's secret account.
