An in-depth conversation with Cody Franson.

I wanted to start with what you talked about when you first came back [from Sweden] on Tuesday. You talked about learning something from last year. What was the biggest lesson that you looked back on over the summer and said ?I've got to do this better?

My big thing [after] last year was really focusing on what I could control and not focusing on what I can't - lineup decisions, thought processes going into games, all that kind of stuff, that's for other people to decide. I can only control how I play in practice, how I compete, and try and put myself in the best position possible to be in the lineup the next night. I've wanted to focus more on being able to separate my work life from my home life a little bit more. I found a lot of the times last year I was taking my work home with me. I was frustrated throughout the course of the day and it [didn't allow] me to be positive when I was at the rink. I want to be able to be a more positive influence around the rink. Just trying to have more fun with things than I did last year and be able to go home and just be with family or whatever and not be thinking about the game.

With Lombardi and possibly Connolly out it means two things - Kadri and Komarov are in, and secondly Luongo is not comming to TO as Nonis obviously counts on the young guns and already said pretty clearly that he gives away young talent only if ge gets young talent back. The rumoured players going to Vancouver such as Bozak, Kadri etc have right now their spots on the Leafs with no one to replace them. Case closed.

Would it not be prudent for them to buy him out and let him try and play somewhere else?

It wouldn't really benefit the Leafs at all. More prudent to keep him in the organization as depth if no trade can be worked out.

Yeah, I guess, since he's not really one that will create too many waves down there. Hopefully he gets out of his funk with the Marlies. Injuries could hit and we could need a center/ warm body.

I don't think the compliance buyouts should be used by the Leafs before the offseason, fwiw, unless some critical cap space is needed and as of now I don't see it.

Accerated compliance buyouts don't effect this years cap.

The accelerated buyout don't take the cap hits off the books for this season any way. All it would do is open up a reserve list spot (and, actually take up a little more cap than sending him to the Marlies - the Leafs will free up $900K with Connolly in the AHL).

@reporterchris
I can confirm the #leafs intend to place Tim Connolly on waivers at noon.

I almost feel bad for being so hard on Connolly last season... Almost.

Good.

I would take this as a sign that Carlyle feels Kadri is ready for the show, otherwise this would be kind of risky with injuries being probable/likely.

I remember the discussion some of us had when Connolly was signed - most were pretty "meh" on him as a player but felt he was the stop gap while Kadri and/or Colbourne developed.  Guess we are at that place.

Fantastic news, great stuff.

Very interesting situation going on here.  Even though the front office is unchanged, there seems to be a green light for those who made personnel decisions that have turned out poorly to be the very ones to correct them.  After all, Burke wasn't running this team by himself.

Wonder if Komisarek has anything to worry about.  ::)

I realize that you probably needed the 2nd year in his contract to get him here, but that was more my issue with Connolly. I didn't like that we were stuck for two years, as I thought there was a high probability, that we'd be here today, mostly because of his injury history.

Again.. good.

Would hate to waste one on the guy just to be all "ooh we're being nice and letting him go free so he can sign somewhere else and resume his majestic career".

I'm liking the decisiveness of Nonis and Carlyle so far.  Seems the whole "loyal to a fault" thing has come down a few pegs.

So far, I'm really enjoying Carlyle's approach, demeanor, and the way he reportedly runs practice.  He seems to impart a sense of trust and comfort in front of the mic.  Like with his recent comments about Kadri, he just seemed to strike the right tone and balance .

Yeah the only way the 2nd year would be of any value would be if he had unseated Bozak on the top line.  That only lasted a couple of weeks into the contract last year.

Pretty dissapointing overall.  He should have been able to at least accomplish the above, but he didn't.

Remember when Don Cherry was yelling about how stupid it was for Wilson to have"his "FIRST LINE CENTRE" (Connolly) "BLOCKING SHOTS!!!?!? "

Yeah umm Don? Have you SEEN this guy play?
