Can someone explain to me what this Occupy Wall Street thing is all about?  I can't figure out what their goal is.  I understand that they don't like corporate greed, but how is camping out going to accomplish anything?

Even the website doesn't say anything about what they want.  The about page doesn't say anything about what their goal is, it's just all about what they're doing and how they're doing it.

Have they made any requests?  How do "We, the people of the United States of America, considering the crisis at hand," plan to "now reassert our sovereign control of our land."?

That's the problem with a lot of protests these days. Little to no discernible cause or goal, confusion over what they're protesting, etc. It's a shame, too, because, these guys have done a great job of organizing what could be a very influential group - one that could conceivably accomplish something - but, I can't help but feel like they've sort of dropped the ball here.

Of course back then I also wore an onion on my belt.....

Was it the style at the time?

Another peaceful protestor becomes the victim of police brutality

Ooh I'm sure that cop did something to provoke him and fully deserved that clothesline.

Poking him with a cattle prod is my guess

It's pretty hard to tell from a still, I mean looking at the cop pulling his arm he could have fallen off balance ( the still image could also suggest he was trying to stop the other cop from falling ) or maybe he was clothes lining him for no reason ( seems about as likely unless the cop nurpled a friend of his or something ) It seems like proof of a scuffle... past that?

I'm pretty sure that's a still photo of this video

If you look real hard you can see the guy in question in the blue shirt jumping at the cop seconds after the cop runs up behind a protester and decks him in the head.

If you didn't say so I'm not sure I could have said with any certainty that was the same situation, tough to make out the guy in blue but if it is and he was jumping in on the other guys behalf then fair enough. I watched the interview on that site with the guy who appears to be getting clobbered by the cop initially and he wasn't arrested and didn't seem to know why he was assaulted, fwiw.

The never ending "The Whole World is Watching" chant makes them sound like a cracked out cult.

Yeah, not him. The guy's in a green shirt, not blue.

Nobody is saying that the guy in the picture is the guy getting hit. He jumps in afterwards.

edit: if you pause the video at three and at four seconds in you clearly see the guy who jumps the cop walking past the camera, in front of the guy the cop hits.

Sorry, yeah, you're right. He jumps in just ahead of the other blue shirted protester. I'd like to hear/see what happened for the officer to deck that guy.

Probably the same thing - it was a one punch domino thrown earlier that morning

Look out.  An online petition has been signed by 7,000 Canadians against the choice to clear out the park so Brookfield can clean it.

I mean, what can you do to stop them if they have gone to online petitions?

Re: Occupy Toronto: This guy lashing out at big pharma. Need to look at alternative health care, even "shamanism," he says. "We will spiral out if we do not take care of this health problem.

Yes, shamanism is clearly the answer. Maybe he's a fringe guy, but still. I don't believe in people advocating snake oil methods of treatment, I think it's downright despicable. I'm not saying that botched operations and prescription drugs don't have the possibility to kill people, but to turn away from tested methods with chances of survival for "even shamanism"?

While I agree that there are issues with social inequality and jobs, I don't see how protesting will help people get jobs, I just don't. Moreover, there's not much to protest about our Canadian banking system, which seems to be pretty conservative. I know a few people working in the financial sector and they aren't out to swindle people. Moreover, one in particular started from nothing, from an immigrant family and began working during the recession of the late 80s. He's now doing very well for himself, but I have a feeling people don't really care about the back story. He's well off now, so he's clearly the enemy.

He's either an idiot or a con artist.

The goal is to bring about the political changes that would result in a more equitable society. This isn't a job interview.

That's a pretty narrow view, I doubt you've done much reading or investigation of what that term and how it applies really means. Western medicine is obviously rooted in the scientific method and that's what we're used to for the most part ( and yes, thankfully in many ways ) but to lump an incredibly large part of world societal belief and action into 'snake oil' euphemisms serves no purpose to me, it's as bad as lumping medical malpractice insinuations onto every MD or suggesting openly that the Catholic Church is just another cult or that every banker is a greedy despicable sob.

I don't know him but what the guy seems to be saying is that alternative health care choices should be investigated which is difficult for me to outright disagree with and I think you're kind of changing the focus by going after Shamanism, it was a tag notion to the greater point.

Usually when someone says 'even...x' they mean it's admittedly/probably on the fringe.
