What to do with Andersen

Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate said:
Aren't all these suggestions sideways moves ? if we reach?

But any sideways move performance-wise in net also brings about either additional assets from an Andersen trade, additional cap space if the sideways goalie is cheaper, or possibly both.

So a lateral move in net can still bring about positives for the organization.

To boil it down, there's really 3 approaches

1)Do nothing, minimally upgrade defence
2)Trade Nylander, upgrade defence, maintain goaltending
3)Trade Andersen, upgrade defence, downgrade goaltending (likely result)

yesno?

And people say WN is not an impact player.

If he's leaning toward retirement then the Rangers wouldn't buy him out, he'd just retire and save them a ton of cap space. They only buy him out if he still wants to play, which it sounds like he does.

Could have sworn he was on a 35+ contract, but, no matter. I still think if the Rangers come to him with serious discussions about buying him out, I still see him opting for retirement instead. Once he got to the later stages of his career, it's felt like it's Rangers or bust for him (at least, to me).

I'd be pretty content with an "average-ish goalie" to platoon alongside Campbell this next season to be honest if it meant we could upgrade our defence even more without having to further weaken our forward depth by moving Johnsson. Lundqvist at $1.5mil would mean we could potentially sign both Brodie and DeMelo. We couldn't do that with a goalie in the $4-5mil range without trading Johnsson and given how voodoo goalies are we could still be getting an "average-ish" goalie at that price.

Also when looking at Lundqvist's numbers I think it's worth pointing out the Rangers have been one of the worst defensive teams in the league these past 4 seasons. Like on par or worse than the Leafs. This past season in particular the Rangers were significantly worse defensively. I dunno it's a bit of a hunch sure but I still think he's got something left.

I get the goalies are voodoo and all, but, they also have a tendency to completely fall off a cliff when they're at the end of their careers - and it seems to me that's where Lundqvist is heading. A fraction of a second more off his reaction time, and he's not even average-ish - he'll be flat out bad. The list of modern-day goalies who maintain or improve their performance at 38 years old is a very very short one - especially if we're looking at guys who still started around half or more of their team's games.

Winning a Cup alongside a few fellow Swedes wouldn't be so bad either.

Sure, I guess. Still not a fan of the idea.

Well Lehner might not be an option anymore. The Athletic's Jesse Granger is reporting they might have already started talking extension with Vegas. Makes sense given how his time there has gone.

Would they keep both Fleury and Lehner?  I can't imagine that would make sense from a salary cap perspective.

Not to mention from a locker room perspective. The article noted that they would likely try to trade him, retaining salary in the process.

Lehner has really come along in his career, I remember when he was on the Sens and I never thought he'd turn into a top tier starter.

Fleury at $7m and 2 years left, I can see Vegas trying to trade him and retaining some salary..1.5-$2m probably. Lehner is up for a big raise.

With his cap hit, they'll almost certainly have to retain close to the max amount, and with his performance this past season, they might even have to throw in a sweetener - or give him away for next to nothing. That .893 ES Sv% is frightening.

I think if Vegas retained $2-3mil he'd be moveable. They wouldn't really get anything for him but I doubt they would mind.

Wonder if any hack journalists are going to report other GMs are mad at Rutherford for his absurd asking prices.

No one is paying that. Murray is too much of a questionable commodity now.

Plus he's an RFA with Arbitration rights so the cost could be even greater cap wise. If he was signed to a decent contract with term it would still be questionable that they'd get a 1st for him.

Rutherford's valuation of 1st round picks (assuming LeBrun's correct in assuming that's the ask price) is great for teams when he's the one trading them but not when he wants to acquire one.

"What do you mean you don't give up a 1st for Murray, I just dealt one for a 3rd liner they're nothing!"
