What's wrong with Schenn?

Injury? Confidence? The Coach? I really have no idea but I think this a hot enough topic right now it deserves it's own thread. Any thoughts, gang?

Is it my imagination that thinks he has not been the same since Neil beat the stink out of him in Game 2 of the season?

He started off poorly last season as well if I recall and then it came together for him.  Maybe he's a slow starter?

I think he'd benefit from a conditioning stint to the Marlies, the brutal road trip they are on might give him a sense of perspective and get him back to what made him successful in the first place.

Schenn could use some lessons on power skating.  I don't know if you can pinpoint to the fact he has bulked up the last couple of seasons and thus has slowed his skating down, but he's slow as molasses out there.  We saw a perfect example last night that he is slow on the pivot and gets beaten way too easily.

I find his physicality is there.  But he is being seriously exposed as a slow defender.  The same things that were said about Franson can be directly applied to Luke.  Luckily for Luke he's the golden child and he's given a lot more rope, although I'd be all for sitting him a game or two.

In my opinion, there were hints of Luke returning to form last night.  Yes, he got bruned - terribly - on the Clarkson goal, but I think his game showed signs of starting to come around.  A few nice outlet passes, he handled the puck well, and generated some offensive opportunities.  Stepping up to a legit tough guy in Clarkson and handling himself pretty well was also encouraging.

I think Schenn's game has been sub-par to date but I also think he's beginning to turn the corner.  He's still 22 and I think the peaks and valleys of his game are indicative of his age and that some maturation is probably required.

*EDIT*: I also wanted to add that I don't think the issue is not having Kaberle.  I do think, however, that Wilso should do a better job of managing his defensive partner.  Schenn should be out there with Liles or Gunnarson.  Gardiner is playing great, don't get me wrong, but I think a more steadying presence would benefit Luke.  But to say that not having Kaberle is the root of his issues is gross hyperbole.

The idea of future Leafs teams being anchored by the perennial All-Star defensive duo of Schenn & Gardiner is an appealing one, so I like the idea of them playing together.

But would the best thing for now be to send Schenn to the Marlies where he could play 20+ minutes a game?  I worry that as ice-time dwindles, each shift becomes more pressure-filled and each mistake becomes more magnified.  Perhaps logging heavy minutes would help clear his head and when the confidence was back, he could return to the Leafs.

I think his skating gets him into trouble. For a young kid he is very slow a foot.. Also may have trouble trying to make quick quality decisions

I think he just needs to get back to the basics, simplify his game try not to do too much.

When did he ever really do 'much'?

Honestly he's not an awesome skater and has very limited offensive skills. Other than playing solid defence and the occasional big hit I'm not sure what else he's supposed to bring to the ice.

So.....the new Aki Berg?

Got to be better than the old Aki Berg no?

I've always thought that a significant number of Leaf fans were out to lunch when it comes to how they view Schenn (more so on other forums than this one).

Schenn's problem is that a: he still makes the exact same mistakes he made in his rookie season 3 years ago, and b: he doesn't have the mobility to compensate for poor decisions.

I still think his upside is, assuming he regains his confidence and physicality, a middle pairing defenseman, but nothing more.
