Wilson suspended 20 games

Naturally :/

Blindside, but I think point of contact wasn't head. Dunno. Whatever we think it's worth, DOPS will give it 25% as much, because, you know, DOPS.

It happened during a pre-season game, so according to the logic of the recent Domi suckerpunch episode Wilson should only be required to sit for the remainder of the preseason.

What happens in preseason stays in preseason.

From that angle all I'm seeing is head contact. I haven't looked at it from any other direction though.

At what point does this Wilson guy get kicked out for good?

Pretty sure Wilson will have more games missed to suspension than goals for the duration of his new contract.

Yeah, it's hard to tell - even a high shoulder to shoulder hit is going to cause the guy's head to snap back pretty hard at that speed, and can cause a concussion regardless. I think the key point here is blindside, and repeat offender. But like most, I'm pretty unimpressed by the suspension severity since, well, forever.

As much as this is being celebrated as the right decision (it is), its still pretty sad that it took until the FOURTH suspension in 105 games to finally send a message that should be heard.

Better late then never I guess. They finally got it right tho!! Predatory hits have no place in hockey.

You've got a real big head start for this comment to age well.

That'll cost him over $1m.

He contract in year 1 is 5M signing bonus and 1.1M salary.

Does anyone know if he has to give back part of his signing bonus or does he only forfeit the salary the time he is suspended?

As a repeat offender, he has to forfeit based on his full salary for the season (including signing bonus)

The money he forfeits is based off his AAV, not salary. So the signing bonus is included in that. It's been reported he'll forfeit $1,260,162.44.

I haven't really seen anybody talk about how that works though. Does he have to pay that back the portion from his bonus right away? I'd also be curious to see how things like taxes and agent fees play into that.

It's interesting because the reported amount he stands to lose is more than the salary.

I think I said it when he was signed to the deal, but couldn't find the post :)

I'm shocked the league finally did something right.  Can't wait to see a guy without a huge reputation get a tiny fine next time with something like this.

Bettman denies Wilson's appeal and affirms a 20-game suspension.  NHLPA lawyers argued the hit wasn't illegal and Wilson deserved no suspension at all.  Now Wilson can appeal to an arbitrator (same one who reduced Watson's dom violence suspension.)
