Wilson suspended 20 games

https://twitter.com/reporterchris/status/1055582782900948994

We don't often get to hear much about this stuff. That's pretty neat. Also confirms the playoff game = 2 regular season games standard that everyone already knew about.

The idea that NHLPA tried to argue Wilson was a "clean" player is both hilarious and insulting.
Well even as much as they'd like to say he's an idiot, they can't. They have to represent him. Nature of the beast.

But they have to be somewhat realistic about the whole thing. They might have had a better chance succeeding in getting some games taken off if they just said that the punishment was overly harsh compared to others as opposed to saying he didn't deserve a punishment at all.

Wilson may not have been looking for a reduction in suspension, but to have the whole thing thrown out. They would have to make that kind of argument if that's what he was looking for.

If that were the case, it's not really the PA that's dumb, it's Wilson.

I wonder how vigorously the PA would defend a guy like Wilson if he made that sort of hit on say McDavid. Would the PA care that the best player in their union is laid out flat with a concussion?

They could easily represent him without saying he's a "clean" player. In fact, they probably could have done a better job of it had they been a little more honest about him.

It's not a question of caring or not, it's that one of the services that the NHLPA provides is representation in the appeals process. That representation is available to players regardless of what they did.

Unions aren't meant to just be for CBA negotiations. They're meant to provide membership with services that work better through pooling resources. Legal representation is one of those things. The NHL has legal representation too but none of us think they should only represent the NHL when the NHL is in the right or are representing a position that has unanimity among NHL clubs.

Realistically, Gary Bettman was never going to overrule Parros' decision. Especially not on the "Yeah, he's guilty but the ban was too long" grounds because Bettman overruling that is tantamount to saying that the league doesn't have faith in Parros to do the job.

If the suspension is going to be reduced it's going to come from the independent arbitration process in which case it's probably smart to keep the dirty/clean question open rather than conceding it because there is no one definition as to what constitutes being a dirty or clean player. I'm sure Capitals coaches/players will say he's clean, obviously you or I will say differently. Having previous suspensions doesn't help but is Kadri a "dirty" player?

Arbitrators tend to work on facts rather than being hockey lifers who would laugh at the notion of Wilson being a clean player. So long as you can argue the point, why wouldn't you?

Uh, ok. He already served 16 games of his suspension. What a system.

That's the way it goes with an independent arbitrator. This time the league totally gets it right but an outside source says no.

Pretty sure Wilson will have more games missed to suspension than goals for the duration of his new contract.

You've got a real big head start for this comment to age well.

Tom Wilson has 476 (regular season) games left in his contract.
He needs to now score at a 0.029 goals per game pace to hit 14 goals to prove me wrong. He'll have to score at a higher pace than that if his suspensions per games played rate holds true.

He has played 391 regular season games thus far, scoring at a 0.09 goals per game pace, and has been docked 18 total regular season games (+ 2 days served of the 20 that were retroactively stricken). That's a suspension pace over his whole NHL career of 0.046 suspension days / games played. His suspensions really only started in 2017 though, so in that time frame, it's actually a 0.23 suspension days per games played (he scored 0.179 goals per game in that span).

All of his suspendable actions have come in preseason or postseason play, but it's not like his early career was spotless.

The arbitrator must go on historical data, so if the league is starting to clamp down on bad behaviour, it has to be consistently handing out bigger suspensions if it wants the precedents to keep increasing in # of games.

From Friedman's most recent 30 Thoughts column:

5. It?s safe to say the Capitals felt teams took liberties on them without Tom Wilson in the lineup. A goal, a goaltender-interference penalty and a fight in his first game. That?s over now.

The very next game both Kuznetsov and Oshie suffered possible concussions due to head shots:

Doop de doop

He did pop in a bunch of goals before this next suspension though so that'll give him some life in that prediction of yours.

What's the over/under? You would think with his history he would try to avoid making contact? Nope, not Wilson. Should be interesting.
