Wings @ Leafs - Mar. 29th, 7:00pm - CBC, TSN 1050

Not since 1985 has a Leafs team lost 8 in a row.

In regulation. They've lost 8 in a row a number of times in between, but those streaks always contained at least one game that went to OT (even though, some of those streak occurred before the OT loser point).

Gardiner's pretty clearly our best defenceman. Rielly's going to have to learn to shoot better than the Jason Blake wristshot special before he becomes an actual impact player, but he should be good too eventually.  The first line is fine offensively but a bit of a disaster in the defensive end.

Beyond that, this team is in a shambles with no real direction. Nonis has watched them collapse without doing anything (read: without replacing the coach), and that combined with his absurd contracts over the past year or so makes me wonder whether he shouldn't be out the door alongside Randy.  This team needs a fresh, objective assessment.

I don't know if there's words for this team.

I think that every one of the owners, along with Dave Nonis and his "tandem of brilliance," should all join Randy and the rest of the clown show at center ice, for the last home game.

That way, the fans could really show them how much they truly appreciate being jerked off, year after year.

I can't wait for next year when we pull within a goal and almost tie it........OHH BOY!!!

That is exactly the type of attitude that every Leaf fan should be feeling right now.  I raise my morning coffee to you.  Well done.

Haven't we already done that? Fired a coach, fired a GM. I mean, it seems like thats all we've done to fix this team up until now.

Seems to me that management needs to address the player personnel in order for this team to try and take the next step. I'm sure Burke would be trying his best right now to do just that. Nonis, on the other hand.... is patient. But I do believe it's time to make some trades and bring in some defensive minded players. Come summer, I'd be working the phones every single day. Everyone is available...for a price, save perhaps Reilly and Bernier.

I just wanted to note one play that has stuck with me that has been nagging at me since last night.  Not sure if it was mentioned at the moment during GDT.
You might recall Kessel putting on his afterburners in a race towards Howard with a Wings defender neck and neck.  The puck was somewhere between all 3 players about 5 feet from the goalie.  It appeared there was a chance Kessel could get to the puck first and swing around the goalie.  In that instant I was on the edge of my seat hoping he would try this as he was really accelerating.  Then, he decided against it and veered away into the corner at full speed.  It was obviously an act of self preservation and maybe even a wise move on that count.
But I can't help feeling that this sort of determination from the whole squad is severely lacking.

Seems to me this roster is quite a bit different from what it was when the last coach was fired.  How could that be all that has been done then?

Yea I don't get this criticism. It's like Toronto is the only team who fires coaches and gm's?

The Opening Day roster 2012 under Ron Wilson:

Joffrey Lupul - Tyler Bozak - Phil Kessel
Matt Frattin - Mikhail Grabovski - Nikolai Kulemin
Colby Armstrong - Matthew Lombardi - Mike Brown
Phillipe Dupuis - David Steckel - Jay Rosehill

Dion Phaneuf - Carl Gunnarsson
Luke Schenn - John Michael Liles
Jake Gardiner - Mike Komisarek

James Reimer
Jonas Gustavsson

Scratches: Clarke MacArthur, Colton Orr, Cody Franson

Current Leafs who were dressed for Wilson's last game behind the Leafs' bench: Reimer, Kessel, Bozak, Lupul, Phaneuf, Franson, Kulemin, Gardiner, Gunnarsson. That's less than half the lineup. At least 1 - and possibly 3 or more - of those players will be gone this summer. The only other current Leaf who played any games with Wilson as coach is Kadri. I'd say the team has done a lot to change the player personnel in that time.

Whole lot of pansies. There are some guys you don't expect to crash and bang a lot but with guys like Kessel it's nothing. Completely not willing to hit, knock someone off the puck etc. I remember the play you mentioned and that's the player he is. Scared to get hurt. He doesn't have that edge that would make him an even better player. Never cuts to the net. Honestly I think his sister plays harder. Pay someone that kind of money and absolutely no toughness. He's not the only one by any means and that's a big part of their problems. I've said this all my life. If I ever ran a team I would rather have a team of hustlers and no quit type players than one dimensional players like Phil.

One dimensional.  Most hilarious criticism of Kessel ever.  But I bet your pie-in-the-sky team of no quit hustlers will all be excellent defensively as well as 40 goal scorers too right?  Or they'll probably just hustle the puck into the net.

Look at how one dimensional that elite scorer is!  Only dimension to his game is elite offensive production.

I look forward to how you somehow connect this response to #3 as well.

You're not wrong - no one is going to confuse kessel with a Getzlaf/Perry/Toews/Crosby etc etc etc in terms of defensive and physical play. He often floats around and plays a lot of easy minutes.

But the ability to score and his playmaking ability has been sensational this year, and that's the hardest skill to acquire, imo. The leafs need to surround him with linemates that can do the heavy lifting.

You tell me what else he does good besides score and yes his playmaking has improved. Other than that? Don't get me wrong I like the guy. I have defended the trade and Burke's thinking but score is all he does. He's a good offensive player thats it. Are we suppose to commend him because his defensive game has improved and he back checks now more than he did. If he didn't back check he wouldn't be on my team. The guy is fragile period. Lately he's been worse. All I'm saying is he doesn't hit at all. He won't take a guy out to try and steal the puck. Plain and simple he shy's away from any rough going. I don't expect him to flatten people but c'mon show a little toughness. 23 hits on the season. Enough said.

St. Louis, 21
Tavares, 23
Malkin, 27
Toews, 29
Crosby, 42
Seguin, 44
Pavelski, 43
Thornton, 43

I wouldn't want any of these guys either...

Or these guys:

Ryan O'Reilly - 21
Patrick Kane - 16
Jeff Skinner - 16
Logan Couture - 15
Rick Nash - 10
Jaromir Jagr - 3

Enough said, alright. Enough said about how useless a stat hits is.
