Winter Classic - Flyers/Rangers

I have no idea why they would have the Leafs involved in this. The viewership and attendence in Canada is already at its maximum. It won't grow the game in the States.

You can't exclude the league's most popular and most profitable franchise forever ...

Well if there's a team in Canada that needs / deserves a global audience to pound its chest in front of its the Leafs! Besides, there is plenty enough USA in Canada's team.

Television ratings for 2012 Winter Classic, etc.,...

I think it probably had more to do with the day.  The numbers are actually pretty impressive.  They moved it to a Monday to avoid Sunday 'playoff implications' football.  So you had some people who had to go back to work the next day/or already went back to work, and I think more people lounge around on New Years with half the stores closed and recovering from partying the night before.  I think that's actually some solid ratings for the NHL there.
