World Cup rosters being announced

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/world-cup-of-hockey/team-usa-one-mission-take-canada/

?I wasn?t in the Olympics, but being a fan, being a U.S. guy, it makes us want to go after them and win one of these tournaments,? says Dubinsky, a member of the nastiest, grittiest, Tortorellist bottom six in the tournament.

...

Gold goes through Mike Babcock?s bunch. So Team USA?s brain trust, helmed by GM Dean Lombardi, looked past skill guys like Tyler Johnson, Kyle Okposo, Phil Kessel and Kevin Shattenkirk and constructed a roster that will attempt to do so, literally.

Head coach John Tortorella calls Dustin Byfuglien ?a renegade,? Jack Johnson ?a patriot,? and Ryan Kesler ?miserable.? These are compliments of the highest order.

The club distributes a daily agenda to its players at camp. One of them this week included a fun ?quote of the day? from Clint Eastwood: ?I have a very strict gun control policy: If there?s a gun around, I want to be in control of it.?

It's going to be so much fun watching this team crash and burn.

Man, the US was dirty in that pretournament game tonight.

No kidding. That their strategy on how to beat Canada, there is going to be bloodshed in the next 2 games.

Gee whiz,  Team Canada got flattened (pardon the pun) by Team USA's hitting game.  It's only an exhibition game, but well, you know, it sets the tone.

I can't believe the hits that (temporarily) took Couture and Giroux out of the game weren't penalized. Refs let a lot go that game.

Much better outcome last night, as Team Canada gave Team USA a dosage of their own medicine, so to speak, outhitting, outhustling, and outscoring them, 4-2 final score.

Goaltender Corey Crawford was steady in net, while Tavares (2 goals), "Jumbo" Joe Thornton Corey Perry, et al. meted out punishment.

Healthy scratches were forward Sidney Crosby and defenceman Jake Muzzin, replaced by winger  Perry and defenceman Jay Bouwmeester.  Both played a solid game.

It's only an exhibition game but interesting to watch nevertheless between these two rivals.

Team Czech defeats Team North America 3-2.

Matthews took shot off foot while shot blocking...

Matthews had a hard shot go off his right foot during the first period of Wednesday?s 3-2 loss to the Czech Republic. He immediately left the ice, but remained in the game.

?It stings, but I don?t think it?s anything too serious,? he said afterwards. ?It?s just one of those things ? when you block a shot it?s going to sting. For all I know it?s fine.?

It only took 2 exhibition games, but Matthews has gone from 13th forward to McDavid's wing opposite Scheifele.

Team North America lines:
Scheifele - McDavid - Matthews
Gaudreau - Eichel - Larkin
Miller - RNH - Drouin
Trocheck - Couturier - Saad

Craig Custance ‏@CraigCustance
* MacKinnon is out today attending a funeral

In the final exhibition game TNA lost to CZE, Matthews lined up on PP1 with McDavid and Eichel, and was on the ice with them and Gaudreau with the net empty at the end of the game.

Morgan Rielly is already playing top pairing minutes with Ekblad so he's kind of boring in that regard.

Exactly what I was expecting.  Connor & Auston alongside Player 3.  Perfect.

I guess it's the Leafs fan staple of pessimism as a defense mechanism that has me trying not to get too excited by this.

I know there are going to be growing pains, but this kid has gone from "might not see the ice" to the 1st line, amongst the very best under 23 players in the world.

It's dizzying if you allow yourself to get carried away a little.

Hold me back, everyone.

I was hoping they'd play Matthews in the middle, but so far he's been playing the no frills Winger role, consistently making plays. Matthews - McDavid - Gaudreau was used against the Czechs and that was pretty disgusting. I'm still hoping for Larkin - Matthews - Eichel to be a line in this tourney.

His first game was... not quite tentative, but Matthews seemed to just want to go with the flow and deferentially contribute as a team player. He certainly made an impact, but quietly so, causing most of the turnovers that led to his linemates' goals.

The next two games, I didn't watch live, but caught the replays of his shifts and he seemed to show that he had calibrated to the game speed and started to assert himself, realizing that he is as good as/better than others on the ice.

I don't care what he says in interviews with his never-rock-the-boat answers, but you can see in the way he played in the Swiss league, and WJs and WHCs after one or two games he knew he could take over games.
